Safe House for LGBTQ Youth
Donation protected
I am a pastor for a church that has created a welcoming space for local LGBTQ+ youth who have been marginalized by their schools.
Most kids who attend are members of their schools GSA (genders & sexualities alliance) group.
We began hosting “hang out” nights in response to several local school boards taking away pride flags and “safe space” stickers from teacher’s classrooms. Many of these students now feel unsafe in their school and most definitely don’t feel that they can be themselves.
Our Church and local community members have transformed an old room that we have been using. We were able to get paint and some supplies donated.
We have been so blessed to have many parents and community members being involved.
Parents volunteer their time and host after school study hours in addition to our Friday night hangout.
The kids are hoping for new furniture. The couches we have are torn and very large. Our tables are wobbly and uneven. The students have also created a wish list of having an LGBTQ inclusive library in our room as well as craft supplies, art supplies and games.
We have been hosting quarterly community pot lucks that are sponsored by a local community group. We want to expand upon this and have an alternative prom for our kids this spring so they can feel comfortable being themselves and experience prom without being worried attending their school sponsored prom.
It has been beautiful to see these kids blossom
over the last few months. Parents thank us over and over for creating a space where their child can be themselves, laughing and having fun…perhaps for the first time after years of hiding who they are.
I would love your support! Know that all of this money will go directly towards furnishing this room, buying supplies and hosting events.
You will be an integral part of changing these young people’s lives.
Thank you!
