Safe Sleep for Mylah Mae

This is our daughter, Mylah Mae. She’s 3 years old and is Autistic. We have run into a bit of a situation that started this past August when she flipped herself out of her crib when it was on the lowest setting. Thankfully she wasn’t hurt at all but it definitely could have been a much scarier situation. Immediately, John (her dad) got to work on figuring out how to make her sleeping arrangement safe until we figured out another option. He took the bottom out of her crib put her mattress on the floor and that bought us about 8” of growth.

If you know Mylah, she’s an exceptionally tall toddler, currently just turning 3 and has been in 5T clothing since this past Fall. So after her tumble we got to work finding her a safe option. Unfortunately, standard toddler beds will not work for her because she has a history of elopement and getting into things that are unsafe if we’re not there to supervise. The best and safest option we’ve come across is called a Cubby Bed. It’s a durable bed with enclosed sides and a video monitor for us to see her. These are not cheap, like the price of a nicer, newer car. $9,000 to be exact. Which we cannot afford on our own. We’re a single income household, so I can be home with Mylah and the cost of all of her therapies has taken its toll on our savings.

We tried to work with our insurance company because it’s medical grade and can be covered by insurance. Unfortunately, after months of back and forth, we were turned down. After research we learned that MI insurance won’t cover her for a medical bed unless she’s terminal. This has been so frustrating because at the end of the day we’re just trying to keep her safe and secure so we can all sleep peacefully at night.

It’s insane the price of keeping our child safe is so high but after exhausting all options and now with her growing more, we’re simply running out of time before she will flip herself out again and could get severely injured.
