Safe Storage PNW

Donation protected
Join in! Please donate to this grass-roots safe storage locker project for people experiencing homelessness.

Help people increase their odds of getting into housing by providing a support program and a secure place to store important and valuable personal belongings while one goes about their day to work, job hunt, attend classes, use public transportation, go to appointments, and work on daily goals.

Your donation to this project can help make all the difference in the world to someone experiencing homelessness.

About Safe Storage PNW

What would you do with all of your possessions, like extra clothing, IDs, keepsakes, medicine, electronics and chargers, birth certificates, and other important documents, if you were constantly living in transition and had no place to call home? Without a safe place to store these important personal belongings, most people experiencing homelessness carry everything they own with them 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. This is a huge mental and physical burden.

In 2016, our group of housed and unhoused community members came together to see how we could make a positive impact for those experiencing homelessness in our community. Through conversations and local surveys, secure storage was identified  as the most needed service for those experiencing homelessness.

Our group, now called Safe Storage PNW, is working to meet this vital need and is asking for your help to make it a reality.

Safe Storage PNW will improve the lives of people experiencing homelessness in a real and tangible way.

In a recent survey, respondents left us these messages and much more about the importance of having a safe place to store their belongings:

"The inability to drag [belongings] with you all day, [is] physically and mentally draining in an already draining situation."

"It's always a setback having to replace things again, and again."

The Pilot Project

The Safe Storage PNW pilot project, run by the non-profit BasicsPNW, will consist of outdoor lockers in 2 to 3 locations around downtown Bellingham.

Locker users will have a personal key code and 24-hour access to their belongings. Each locker will be large enough to fit suitcases, backpacks, personal hygiene items, clothing and more.

Locker users will sign a month-to-month lease agreement for access to a locker and will regularly meet with Safe Storage staff to work on meeting personal goals and breaking down housing barriers.

We believe that this personal connection and support is key to the success of the locker program and helping people transition off of the streets and into a safe place to call home. It’s this connection and support that sets our program apart from typical storage programs for the homeless, making Safe Storage PNW a unique, first in the nation, locker storage program for people experiencing homelessness.

How You Can Help

We are so thankful to the many individuals and organizations who have stepped up so far and are helping make Safe Storage a reality for the people that need it the most. But we need more support!

Our goal is to raise $35,000 to get this pilot project up and running.

Because homelessness is a community-wide issue, we hope to see support from the entire community – including individuals, local businesses, cities, the County, churches, and other organizations. We are asking individuals to fund half of our overall goal, and would love to see at least 500 people step up and donate in support of this project.

This project is about more than just a safe place to store belongings, it is about building relationships and making sure that some of our most vulnerable community members are being supported. It is about making sure that everyone in our community has their basic needs met and an opportunity to thrive. It is about safety, love, respect, and compassion.

Your donation of any amount, large or small, to Safe Storage PNW will go towards providing a sense of connection and hope for our fellow community members experiencing homelessness. Please join in this community effort!

If you would like to contribute more but aren’t able to do so right now, please contribute by sharing this GoFundMe with your friends, family, co-workers, church group, neighbors, book club, etc. Sharing on Facebook and other social media can increase our donations by 350%.

Thank you for your investment in our community!!
