Sahlu's Birthday Fund for Wadeye Village Children
Donation protected
On July 19, 2020, Sahlu Haile turns 70.
This is his birthday present.
Sahlu has dedicated his life to philanthropy. His 40+ year career was spent promoting reproductive health, development, and the environment throughout Africa. In his personal life, it's difficult to list all the ways he contributes to his community. For example:
He is actively involved in fundraising and improvement initiatives for his highschool in Addis Ababa (Teferi Mekonnen Highschool),
He has created over 100 jobs for the local youth in Debre Zeit,
He actively collects and promotes African art and champions African artists,
He supports grassroots development projects like a drinking and irrigation water initiative in Bahir Dar,
He incorporates innovative approaches to reduce Ethiopia's environmental footprint (like using recycled plastic bottles for windows, reclaiming wastewater for irrigation, and adopting solar-powered lighting), and
He supports the Wadeye School in his family's native village, Wadeye--the subject of this campaign.
What is the Wadeye School?
The Wadeye School is an education project located about 190 kilometers southwest of Addis Ababa in the village of Wadeye, Ejha Woreda, Gurage Zone, Ethiopia. Sahlu has been involved in this initiative to develop education in the region with a focus on literacy, retention, gender parity, employability, and teacher training.
How will the money be used?
To date at the Wadeye School, an elementary school has been built with 370 students enrolled. The construction of a secondary school is in progress and will accommodate 630 more students.
In our search for a meaningful birthday gift, we (his grandchildren, his children, his wife, his family, and his friends) thought to partake in Sahlu's journey of giving. The money raised from this campaign will go towards the completion of the Wadeye highschool, on Sahlu's behalf.
