Sakinah Home for Girls

Tax deductible
Somalia currently boasts a population of close to fourteen million people. However, decades of violent civil war, unstability, and chaos have left many Somalis without access to very basic needs. On top of that, the violence has caused many

The decades of civil war so an almost complete collapse of their education system. Somalia has one of the lowest rates world wide for school enrollment. According to UNICEF only thirty percent of Somali children are even in school and of that number, only forty percent of school children are girls.

One time, I was working with a group to drop off donations to Somali refugees in Dallas. When I dropped off the items I had to get the signature of the resident to show they had received the donation. I’ll never forget the look of shame on one mothers face when she stumbled over explaining to us in broken english that she couldn’t write her name in any language. I remember thinking of all the worlds that education, especially reading had opened up to me and I saw her small x at the bottom of the paper as a sign of all the doors that had been slammed in this womans face because of poverty and war.

At Mu Delta Alpha, we have made it our mission not just to support and believe in American Muslim women. We knew we would be missing out on so much if we kept our eyes on just what was immediately around us. “I created you in tribes so that you may know each other,” says surah 49:13 from the Holy Quran. We know that sisterhood involves, prayer, laughter, and making sure our sisters have what they need. When we decided that our mission was never going to be confined to what zip code or country line, we realized that Allah (SWT) had called this ummah to be a family. A family without borders, a family with a relentless love, a family with a promise to meet our sisters where they were and walk with them while they grew.

This Ramadan, I know you are going to be getting tons of calls for donations. I know there are so many beautiful charities and organizations out there to give to.

But I know a girl in Somalia, who is sitting with a book in her hands. Right now, the words are strange and unfamiliar squiggles. But with your help, she will one day open the book inshaAllah. She will read the stories. She will understand. And when she sets off for her first day of college, with a whole new collection of books in her bag, she will never forget the first day her eyes caught hold of word and understood it.

The Sakeena girls home will not just provide these girls with education. That parts the easy bit. The Sakeena Girls home is being set up to provide a place of rest for girls who have only known war. It is not going to be a factory where we churn girls in and out. We are going to build a library, inshallah. We are going to plant a garden, inshallah. We are going to make a home for them. The Sakeena Home for Girls is not just for Somali girls or Muslim girls. We have designed this place from the beginning to be a place for all vulnerable orphans.

This Ramadan, please donate so that we can open the doors of Sakeena Girls home for fifty girls with different stories, fifty girls with different dreams, fifty girls who are going to learn just how far they can go.
