About the Benefactor:

Salmon Creek Community School

Welcome to the enchanting world of Salmon Creek, nestled deep in the breathtaking Redwoods of Northern California. Here, amidst the serene beauty of nature, a vibrant community thrives—one that embraces off-grid living, sustainability, and a back-to-nature ethos. At the heart of this extraordinary community lies the Salmon Creek Community School, a beloved institution that embodies our collective dedication to early childhood education.

Our school is more than just a place of learning. It is a haven where children flourish, nurtured by a nature-based, play-centered Pre-K program inspired by the renowned Waldorf education models. Our curriculum focuses on the holistic development of every child, fostering their speaking and listening skills, social-emotional literacy, physical strength, coordination, practical work, and artistic expression. These essential foundations form the bedrock of our pre-academic curriculum, carefully designed to unlock the true potential of each child during these formative years.

Regrettably, the future of our tiny school hangs in the balance. As the population in our area has dwindled and our community's economy has faced challenging times, we recognize the urgent need to seek support beyond our borders. Our children live in such remote areas that attending schools "in town" would require them to endure exhausting daily commutes of up to 2 hours. However, by attending our school, located just 15 minutes away from their homes, they gain precious time to fully embrace their natural curiosity and innate talents. Humboldt County, our beloved home, has been significantly impacted by a recent economic depression, leaving young families struggling to secure the necessary funds to keep their children in school. Today, we humbly appeal to your generosity to save our cherished institution.

Funds will be going directly to:

-Curriculum supplies

-Updated, age-appropriate play equipment

-Building maintenance and repair -solar battery replacements, chimney repair, kitchen improvements

As our children grow older, they will progress through our school, guided by dedicated teachers up to the 8th grade. Moreover, we plan to create space for homeschool programs in higher grades, ensuring social interaction remains a vital part of their educational journey.

To truly understand our mission, let us delve into a bit of history from our Handbook. In 1970, a group of visionary parents in rural Salmon Creek joined forces to establish the Salmon Creek Community School, driven by the desire to offer an education rooted in their own community. Over the years, the school has evolved, obtaining its California 501(c)3 status in 1977 (non-profit tax ID# 94-2430-973). Beyond providing education, our grounds serve as a venue for activities that foster community interaction, education, health, and safety. Recognized by FEMA as an emergency evacuation site, our school plays a vital role in supporting our neighborhood.

Our meticulously crafted PreK-8 curriculum aligns with state standards while honoring our founding philosophies and embracing the best practices in child development. It empowers students to not only gain knowledge but also foster independence, critical thinking, and boundless creativity. We strive to create a learning environment that engages parents and incorporates local history, neighbors, and the surrounding environment as invaluable educational resources.

Now, we kindly implore you to click that donation button and join us in supporting the dreams of our little ones. Every contribution, no matter the size, will be received with immeasurable gratitude and joy by our entire community. Together, let us sow the seeds of a brighter future, one where our children can thrive and flourish. Thank you for your unwavering support.
