Saludos amigos:

Dear friends,
As many people know, Luis Rodriguez Olmo is a great legend of Puerto Rican baseball. Not only was he the 2nd Puerto Rican player to reach the Major Leagues, but he is nowadays known as "America's Baseball Player" due to his amazing achievements in every American country where he played.
My grandfather's career took place during baseball's "golden years", an epoch of great pride and honor, but one in which the players' salaries were extremely low compared to the amount modern players receive.
Nowadays, both Luis and his lifelong wife, Tita, are suffering from Alzheimer's disease, aside from other health conditions common to their ages (96 and 92, respectively).
This state of affairs has forced our family to hire outside assistance 24/7 to take care of them since neither of them can do anything by themselves anymore.
Our family has spent the last two years dealing with Luis' illness (and five years with my grandmother's), a situation which sadly has depleted our funds. Aside from the salaries of the caretakers, we have on our shoulders all the other everyday expenses of their home, and also their medical expenses, which on medicines alone are very costly. Luis relies solely on his Social Security check and on a yearly donation of $4,000, which he has been receiving for the last two years from his time in baseball.
Our family took the decisition long ago to keep them in their own home since this was always the wish of my grandfather. However, it is a dificult endeavor because my grandparents only have my mother, her husband, and myself to look after them, and both my mother and myself are facing very serious health issues ourselves. Even though we work extremely hard every day to help them in every way we can, our help is not enough.
Our family has considered several times the possibility of placing them in a home for the elderly, even though, as I said, their wish was always to remain in their own home. Often we become overwhelmed from the hard work of caring for them, but the homes we have explored are either of very poor quality or are extremely expensive, more so than simply keeping them home.
My grandfather was always very hesitant to brag about his good deeds, but the truth is that throughout these past decades he never used his fame for his own profit. He always signed any picture or item people sent to him, attended any event he was invited to, and welcomed into his home any fan or person who wished to meet him. For all of these things, he never charged a dime.
We humbly ask all those who wish to cooperate with Luis Rodriguez Olmo and his wife to do so. This way we will be able to fulfill their dream of staying in their own home with proper care. Our family will be always grateful for your support.
With gratitude,
Yuri Perez, Olmo's grandson, writing on behalf of myself, their daughter, Ana Rodriguez, and their son-in-law, Carlos Bonetti.
