Sam Asbury Memorial for Suicide Awareness
Donation protected
Friends,
The past two years, Cole Jones and I have organized a UGA SAE vs. KA 3-on-3 basketball tournament to raise money for suicide awareness. In years past, the money raised has been donated to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and fraternities who were affected by the loss of their friends.
Sadly, this year’s event hits close to home, as the money will be raised to honor 2019 UGA grad and Sigma Chi alum Sam Asbury. Sam unexpectedly and tragically took this own life in February. Sam was an exceptional athlete at Holy Innocent’s Episcopal School in Atlanta, where he was a member of both the golf and basketball teams. In addition to breaking countless records during his high school basketball career and scoring over 1000 points, he earned a golf scholarship and played at Georgia State University for two years before transferring to UGA.
However, it was what he did off the court that caught the attention of so many. Those who did not get the chance to know Sam were unable to experience the endless joy he brought to others. He had the ability to light up a room as soon as he walked in and constantly made his friends and family laugh.
With the support of the Asbury family and HIES, the money raised from this year’s tournament, which will take place on March 21st, will be donated for a memorial for Sam on the HIES campus. Sam had an incredible impact on the HIES community, and we feel this will be a great way to remember him.
As we are tragically reminded by Sam’s death, you never know what life struggles someone may be experiencing. We encourage everyone to start a conversation with your family and friends about suicide awareness and help them understand the love and support that is there to help them.
If you wish to donate by check, you may also contact Cole Jones or me. Money not used for Sam’s memorial will be donated in his honor to the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention.
Thanks for your generosity and continued prayers for all of Sam’s family and friends.
