Sam Goes to Ecuador

Hey There,
My name is Sam Super, I’m a native of Stamford, Connecticut who recently moved to Jersey City, NJ.
Three months ago I took a leap of faith and quit my job in sports marketing to pursue a dream of becoming a professional actor. Although I had a bright future at my previous company, there was a creative itch I felt inside, that needed to be scratched. You see growing up, I always had a passion for Film, TV and the Theatrical Arts. I used to imagine myself acting on the big screen, working alongside some of my idols like Edward Norton, Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman. I woke up one day, looked at myself in the mirror and decided if I don’t give my dream a shot, I’ll regret it for the rest of my life.
Since quitting my job, I have been working consistently to build up my resume as an actor. In researching ways to better myself as an actor and a person, I stumbled upon Dramatic Adventure Theatre. I recently applied for their ACTion: Ecuador artist expedition and I’m happy to announce, that I have been selected for the program.
What exactly is Dramatic Adventure Theatre?
Dramatic Adventure Theatre (DAT) creates opportunities for artists around the world to become intimately involved with diverse multi-cultural communities by building theatre platforms where ideas, talents and original works can be shared. Since 2006, DAT has sent over 280 theatrical artists to over 9 different countries on 4 continents.
So what is ACTion: Ecuador all about?
ACTion: Ecuador is a month-long immersive journey across the diverse terrains of Ecuador. The trip is from June 29, 2017 to July 29, 2017. During that time, actors collaborate with professional artists on devised theatre pieces. Those pieces are taken and used to inspire and empower local youth through theatrical education programs (acting and playwriting). Actors will engage with the local communities through service projects and cultural events. I hear we have to attend something called a “frog concert” (Yes that’s a real thing). The program climaxes with original devised works that will be performed in both Quito and New York City.
What are you going to be doing in Ecuador for a month?
1. The adventure begins in Quito, a breathtaking maze of Spanish colonial splendor set in the shadows of volcanic peaks. Actors will take place in director-led rehearsals, engage in playwright workshops and prepare for upcoming service work.
2. Next stop is the Quechuan Village of Quilotoa. During this stay, DAT will teach theatre to local children and learn the art of Andean mask dancing. We’ll probably make friends with a llama or two.
3. Serving assignments begin, The DAT team gets spilt up into three service groups. One group will travel to the Afro-Ecuadorian region of Esmeraldas. The second group will travel to the heart of the Amazon rainforest to visit the town of La Selva. The third group will follow in the footsteps of Charles Darwin and travel to the Galapagos.
4. The team reconvenes in the charming village of Mindo. During this stage of the expedition, actors will engage in intensive rehearsals to polish the original performance pieces created on the trip.
5. The trip will culminate with a return to Ecuador’s capital city of Quito. ACTion: Ecuador will preview their finished performances pieces to the natives, before returning to New York City. Two weeks later, the play will be performed in New York City for all of our friends and family to see.
Why are you telling me all this Sam?
To put it plain and simple, I need your help.
The total cost of this expedition is $4,900 and it includes every moment of the trip, from my takeoff and landing in New York, to our travels throughout Ecuador, masterclasses, food and other daily expenses. Whether your donation is $5 or $500, I am extremely grateful for the contribution.
As contributors to this trip of lifetime, this journey is just as much yours as it is mine. I want you to be a part of as much of it as possible! So I will undoubtedly keep you updated with photos, videos and blog posts via social media (twitter, facebook, Instagram) throughout my whole trip to Ecuador. I will also update you guys on the process of putting up our original play upon our return to New York.
Thank you for your support! Please SHARE this fundraiser on all your favorite social media platforms so we can get the word out and expand our fundraising family.
