Meet Sierra Khaleesi Wechsler!

 

As many of you know, Sam has aspired to be a parent for many years, and has steadfastly pursued different paths to parenthood. In September 2019, after exploring possible avenues and taking into consideration her individual situation and circumstances, she committed herself to becoming a parent — she hoped — through private, domestic infant adoption.

 

After waiting two and a half years, Sam was finally matched with a birth-mother who felt that Sam was the right person to raise Sierra, born at 1:10am on Thursday, January 13, 2022. Sam got the call on Thursday morning, and was in Houston before midnight. On Saturday night, the adoption papers were signed! Sam and her daughter, Sierra, are happy and well, and they will be home in Massachusetts as soon as the interstate paperwork is processed.

 

As you may know, the adoption process is quite a roller coaster. Having accompanied Sam throughout her journey, I have witnessed how it can be beautiful and heartbreaking, exciting and emotional, fulfilling and draining, all at once. It also is very expensive. Adoptive parents pay home study fees, legal fees, medical expenses, agency fees, travel expenses, birth-mother expenses, consultant fees, along with other miscellaneous costs and expenses. And that's just to bring a child home. Domestic adoption often costs between $45,000-$60,000. While the price is high, it is necessary for an ethical and legal adoption.

 

Many of you have asked how you can help — THANK YOU!! For those of you who are able, the most helpful thing you could do is contribute to Sam and Sierra’s Family Support Fund. Many folks have offered hand-me-down baby equipment and clothing, and Sam hopes to acquire much of what she needs second-hand.
