Who we are and what we do
Samos Volunteers has been covering the basic needs of refugees arriving on the Greek island of Samos since the autumn of 2015. As the needs in the camp changed regularly, so does our role. First supporting local residents providing emergency aid to refugees arriving by boat, the objective of the group has now shifted to identifying and fulfilling the needs of new arrivals and vulnerable people and sustaining educational and recreational activities for both children and adults. In April 2017 Samos Volunteers realised one of its long-term dreams and opened up the Alpha Centre. The Alpha Centre is our community centre, where we run language classes (such as English, French, German and Greek) and organise a number of other activities, for example women's activities and music class. Other activities outside our centre range from swimming lessons for children and kite flying with teenagers to chess tournaments and the screening of football matches,
Why we do it
People are fleeing horrific circumstances in their home countries for safety and are being denied both freedom and dignity in the European detention centres. The Samos camp is currently home to around 1,100 refugees; it is overcrowded and many have been there for over a year, following the controversial deal between the EU and Turkey in March 2016. We as Samos Volunteers put everything we have into providing necessary services and human solidarity to make the conditions in the camp less dire and instil a sense of normality in their everyday life.
You make our work possible!
Our work is carried out entirely by private donations and we would not be able to run or continue our projects without you. Whenever possible, we purchase vital items locally to avoid extensive delivery costs and contribute to the island’s economy. For those arriving on the island wet and cold from the sea journey, we prepare and distribute emergency kits which include underwear, joggers, socks and sandals, coming from donations or purchased on the island.
Your donation is used to continue the activities and distributions and is imperative for the improvement of the day to day lives of the refugee population in Samos.
A big thank you for your help: every cent counts! Please spread the word about the work we do and look into volunteering with us yourself. Go to www.samosvolunteers.org for more information!
