Sam's prosthetic leg

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Sam McCall and I live, work and play in Durango, Colorado. In July of
2003, when I was 21 years old, my life was
forever changed. I was in a motor vehicle
accident that resulted in my left leg being
amputated above the knee. As you might
imagine the road to recovery was long and
bumpy. First, I had to heal from the surgeries and trauma then, I had to learn how to walk all over again using a prosthetic. During this time I had the realization that returning to
construction work was not practical and chose to pursue a career as a nurse. Flash forward to
today and I have been working as an LPN for
13 years.

The prosthetic I wear on a daily basis is
equipped with a microprocessor and does
great to keep me on the move during my 12
hours shifts. While these prosthetics have
come a long way over the last 20 years they
still have their drawbacks. For starters, the
cost is significant; with insurance a prosthetic can reach upwards of $10K-$20K. Secondly,
they don’t last forever. Most microprocessor
prosthetics only last about 5 years before they start failing and need to be replaced. Lastly,
they are not waterproof and cannot handle
high impact sports.

The last point is what has brought me here, to Go Fund Me. When I’m not working as nurse I enjoy maintaining an active lifestyle and trying to keep up with my 4 year old daughter. I
enjoy everything mountain living has to offer- hiking, skiing, mountain biking, paddle boarding, rafting, and cycling. My daily leg can
handle the hiking but, it simply cannot be used to do any of other activities I enjoy. For the last 7 years I have utilized the First Generation
Bartlett Tendon knee to keep me active and it has been great. It does not use a
microprocessor, instead it utilizes a shock
system and rubber tendons to mimic
movement. It can be fully submerged in water and keep going. However, like all prosthetics do, it has reached the end of its life cycle and
is no longer safe for me to wear. I’m looking to
upgrade to the G3 Infinity knee from
LeftSide Industries Inc. Sadly, insurance will
not cover a leg like this since I have my daily
microprocessor leg. I’m hoping that with your help and donations I can offset the cost of this knee and keep going with the activities I love. You can check out the leg at www.leftside.life.
