San Diego/Tijuana World Design Capital 2024

The Design Forward Alliance, a 501(c)3 nonprofit corporation, in partnership with the UCSD Design Lab, the Burnham Center for Community Advancement, and a binational team, is leading the charge to become the first binational World Design Capital in 2024.

Nine months ago we asked for your help and as a result of your generous donations we raised over $17,000 and were able to create a world class bid. In July 2021, our region was selected as one of only two finalists. We are now actively competing with Moscow, Russia for the final selection.

Now we move into the shortlist site visit phase. Let’s bring our bid to life and win! This will only be possible with your continued support. Our fundraising goal is $50,000 and time is of the essence!

THE VISION

Changing the world and designing the future begins at HOME. The global pandemic has catalyzed society to rethink the design and function of all public and private spaces. As we consider how to create a more verdant and inclusive future for our region, we know we need places that are more socially just, environmentally sustainable and economically equitable. This work will require designers, creators, innovators and leaders working together to help shape this transformation. San Diego’s creative community is ready to share our vision with the world and enable our great city to be a laboratory and convener of ideas for tomorrow.

WHY SAN DIEGO/TIJUANA?

The extraordinary level of collaboration found in the San Diego/Tijuana mega-region has made us a global leader in cross-border trade, culture, and innovation. As the World Design Capital host region in 2024, our region will demonstrate how our unique binational culture fosters an urban design ethic that is inclusive, focused on people and grounded in the community. San Diego and Northern Baja are kindred spirits whose proximity creates a special bond and diverse point of view. It’s our HOME and a collaborative spirit of cross-cultural innovation that we seek to share with the world.

A JOURNEY OF TRANSFORMATION AND A YEARLONG SHOWCASE

Our goal is to positively transform our region as we create our future. As a World Design Capital, San Diego/Tijuana will:

1. Continue to work with local civic, business, and community leaders to amplify and augment regional priority efforts.

2. Identify and develop a yearlong program of unique events, specific to our region and people, to attract both local audiences, international visitors, and media.
