Sanctuary Guinea Pigs Costs for January
Los Angeles Guinea Pig Rescue is one of the only local rescues that takes in all Guinea pigs,
no matter their sex, age, physical condition or injuries. Because of this, there is a need for a
Sanctuary for the animals who are not adoptable, to live out their lives with the best quality
of life possible.
Our bill for January is $600
In our Sanctuary there is an average of twenty to twenty
five special needs pigs at any one time.
They are all in long term or hospice care and not adoptable. Their medical conditions range from
Congestive Heart Failure from Scurvy (lack of adequate vitamin C), to broken or
deformed legs, broken backs, head tilt, protruding eyes, blindness, ovarian
cysts , chronic dental issues , tumors, old age
and many other physical conditions. Many require 7/24 care when needed.
Our Sanctuary also takes in dumped animals from the local
shelters with various health issues like
pneumonia, collapsed lungs, dental problems, upper respiratory infections,
starvation, tumors, skin infections, etc.
LAGPR provides the funds for their medical care so these animals have a
chance for a good quality of life and possible adoption.. Many of these pigs
require intensive care like syringe feeding and nebulizing to bring them back
to health, which is provided at the Sanctuary.
Some are able to be adopted but many go into hospice care or pass on due
to their debilitated conditions.
Our Sanctuary pigs live in a private home and are treated as
personal pets. They have large C&C cages with soft fleece, comfy beds and
most have cage mates. They receive a
high quality diet including pellets, fresh hay and vegetables, plus
supplemental vitamin C, which is absolutely necessary to prevent Scurvy. They
also require daily medications for their health conditions. They all receive
personal attention and love several times a day.
The entire process of having a Sanctuary is incredibly time
and cost intensive. The medications,
food and care costs average of $600.00 a month which does not include the
ongoing veterinary bills.
