THE VISION
Changing the world begins at HOME. The global pandemic has catalyzed a collective look at how societies must rethink the design and function of all public and private spaces going forward. As we make our way forward to creating a new post-pandemic world, we know we need to create places that are more socially just, environmentally sustainable and economically equitable. This work will require a multitude of multi-disciplinary designers, creators, innovators and leaders who will help shape this transformation. San Diego’s creative community is ready to share its visions with the world and enable our great city to be a laboratory and convener of ideas for tomorrow.
WHY SAN DIEGO/TIJUANA?
The extraordinary level of collaboration found in the binational San Diego/Tijuana megaregion has made us a global leader in cross-border trade, culture, and innovation. As the World Design Capital host region in 2024, San Diego/Tijuana will display how its unique binational qualities and outdoor culture fosters urban design that is inclusive, focused on people, and grounded in the community. San Diego and Northern Baja are kindred spirits whose proximity creates a special bond and diverse point of view. It’s our HOME and a collaborative spirit of cross-cultural innovation that we seek to share with the world.
A YEARLONG SHOWCASE
As a World Design Capital, San Diego/Tijuana will identify and develop a yearlong program of unique events, specific to our region and people, to attract both local audiences, international visitors, and media. Throughout 2024, our region will highlight seven Signature Events in partnership with the World Design Organization , including: WDC Signing Ceremony, World Design Street Festival, World Design Spotlight, World Design Experience, World Design Policy Conference, World Design Network of Cities Meeting, and the World Design Capital Convocation Ceremony.
YOUR PARTNERSHIP IS ESSENTIAL
To be selected, our megaregion must demonstrate the support of regional stakeholders, government, civic groups, corporations, educational institutions, art and cultural organizations, and the public.
The Design Forward Alliance has already secured support from officials from the cities of San Diego and Tijuana. It is currently assembling a binational steering committee and unifying design organizations to activate the cross-border design community.
