Wife of Philip Weinstein, grandmother of Robin and Dylan, mother to me, Sandra was our guardian and a protector. Among the chief advocates for and architects of the New York City free breakfast program, her life changed the world for the better, and her memory will always be a blessing to those lucky enough to have known her.
Saying goodbye shouldn't mean financial ruin. I am the only adult left alive in my family. The funeral and burial cost about $3,500; saving some of my mother's possessions and paying urgent bills are likely to cost at least as much. I have saved about a thousand dollars to begin this process. While the Jewish Federation has chipped in meaningfully, we need to raise a further $4,000 over the next few weeks in order to save at least part of my family's possessions--some of which are more than a century old--from being discarded by her property managers. Your help at this time would mean the world to my family. Please help now if you can.
My mom and I have been just about getting by month to month, helping each other out. We had enough money for most things we needed, but like many others, we did not have savings to speak of or insurance for death expenses. I'm asking those of you who feel you can help in some form or fashion to step forward. I know these are tough times. If you are not in a position to give, I of course understand. But if you can help, now is the time. Your contribution now will make a permanent difference in the life of my family.
Sandra lived a really good life. I was very fortunate to have had such a strong and loving mother. All of us know we are only here for a Time, and then our time is over. We live with this knowledge every day. It is one of the things that makes our lives meaningful. We are alive, we do what we can to make the world a better place, we love one another, and then our time comes and we say goodbye.
