Dear Family and Friends –
We are starting this GoFundMe for our cousin, nephew & grandson, Michael Sandstedt, and his amazing family. Michael is 17 years old and is a kind, resilient and brave young man. Soon, Michael will go to Boston Children’s Hospital for his 24th surgery. He is battling a rare, life-threatening complication of heart disease called PLE (protein-losing enteropathy).
The only cure for this condition is a heart transplant. Unfortunately, Michael is not a candidate for a heart transplant due to his previous gastro-intestinal surgeries. His medical team has concluded that a procedure to put three stents in his heart is his best chance of getting the condition into remission. This procedure is considered high risk, but despite the risk, Michael has chosen to go for the surgery because he wants to feel better and gain the energy to attend school and re-join his friends. He hopes this surgery will help him get back to living a normal life.
Your gracious contribution will contribute to Michael’s medical expenses. It will also help alleviate the burden of urgent travel, lodging and food costs that his family will incur as they must travel from their home in Asheville, NC to Boston, MA for the surgery. Michael and his mom, Caroline will be in Boston for three weeks, during which she must take a leave from work to be there with her son during the operation.
Please send us your prayers and share our message with your friends and family. We greatly appreciate your help in giving Michael, and our family, a fighting chance.
