On January 15th, our mom Sandy was driving on I-229 in Sioux Falls when another car drove through the interstate median and hit her head on. The driver of that car did not survive and our mom was left with traumatic injuries, including severe fractures to both legs, foot, arm and wrist, as well as a cracked sternum, ribs and vertebra. Miraculously, she survived with no head or neck injuries. She needed to be extricated from the car and was taken to Avera hospital where she underwent immediate surgery to stabilize her injuries. She spent the next three weeks in and out of surgery.
After 21 days at Avera, she was transported to Omaha (in a pink ambulance!). She spent 45 days in an acute care hospital which gave her injuries time to heal and helped her become strong enough to start rehabilitation.

In March, she moved to an inpatient rehab facility in Omaha and has spent the last 3 months working hard to regain her mobility.

On June 6, 150 days after the accident, surgeons gave her the OK to start bearing weight on both legs again! She is truly a testament to her faith. Throughout it all she has kept a positive attitude and relied on prayer to give strength - she always has a smile on her face.

She will soon be moving to an inpatient acute rehab program where she will undergo intense rehab in preparation to go home. Due to the long recovery time, she made the very difficult decision to retire at the end of April. If you know her personally, you know how much she loved her job. And as you can imagine, she is looking forward to going home and getting back to the life she shares with our dad in Valley Springs.

As we look ahead to her return home, we would like to help alleviate the impact of the accident. Because the other driver was uninsured, the financial burden has fallen to mom and dad. We chose to start this fundraiser to help with the medical bills and ongoing expenses from the accident. If you’re able to give - whether that be monetary, a card or a prayer - we sincerely thank you. Your support is so greatly appreciated!

We know how blessed we are. The accident was life changing but we feel grateful to still have her with us and that she continues to make tremendous progress.
