Sankofa Program (Phase 1 - Infrastructure)

Donation protected
The Sankofa Program is a program sponsored by Priestess Haneera Abounu's non-profit Naziafah Spiritual Institute. Sankofa is a study abroad program where African American children can come to Cotonou Benin for the school year. The children will receive a formal education at Le Petite Poucet and learn history, culture, and arts at the Naziafah Temple in Allada Benin.

Support the Sankofa program (PHASE 1)

I am inviting the conscious community to support this program. Nazaiafah Spiritual Institue needs monetary and in-kind donations.

In phase one development, donations will go towards the immediate infrastructure of the program.

Immediate Infrastructure needs
  • Coverage for two years of operating expenses, which includes current housing, school fees, supplies, books, food, internet, electricity, weekend accommodations, transportation costs, and field trips.
  • Purchase of school vehicles for reliable transportation needs.
  • The construction of a children's spiritual learning center at the temple in Ayou Benin (approx 1.0 hour outside of Cotonou)
  • Purchase land property for the establishment of the main campus and dorms in Cotonou Benin

Donations will also support the staff by covering their expenses and per diem for two years. The team includes teachers, cultural workshop providers, house parents, and temple workers.

Please email for any questions or in-kind donations

Message from Priestess Haneera Abounu
I have been coming back and forth to Africa for about ten years. So, I had an intense push to learn more about my culture and heritage. During my time in Africa, I initiated into Vodun. My home temple is in Allada Benin, one hour away from the capital Cotonou Benin.

Due to the drastic miseducation of African American youth, I became a homeschooling parent five years ago. A growing population of parents are tired of our urban communities' school system and societal conditions. Unfortunately, the culture African Americans have been given is unsuitable. When COVID hit, I knew I needed to take my children to Africa, where they were safe. So I repatriated to Cotonou Benin in 2020.

As a result, my children received the experience of international and cultural education while maintaining formal educational standards. I wish to bring that experience to other families looking to reclaim and preserve our traditions. For that reason, the Sankofa Program was created.
