Friends of San Lucas Mission Trip
"The Friends of San Lucas was created to carry on the legacy of Fr. Greg Schaffer, by listening, responding to, and walking in solidarity with the people of San Lucas Toliman in an effort to alleviate the suffering and dependency created by the ‘process of poverty.'
We recognize that we are to be a bridge, to share with our brothers and sisters in the United States of America who have been associated with our mission, by offering hospitality, and by sharing the culture, struggles, hopes, and aspirations of the people of Guatemala and through this avenue of solidarity provide funding to keep the projects going.
As Jesus responded to people and their needs, we believe that it is or mission to respond to the expressed felt needs of the people of San Lucas Toliman and the surrounding area, that form the larger community. We will uphold the Christian Social Doctrine that Fr. Greg weaved through all his decisions and practices."
Friends of San Lucas- Toliman, Guatemala
Ever since 2011, when I went on a short medical mission trip to Guatemala with mom, I have wanted to return and spend more time in the country that I fell in love with in such a short time.
This summer, from May 25th- July 25th, I have the opportunity to serve the community of San Lucas Toliman, Guatemala. Some projects I may be involved in include: construction, coffee processing & picking, stove building, and reforestation. Along with these projects, I will learn about the Mayan culture, the work of the parish, and life in Guatemala.
San Lucas Toliman is located next to Lake Atitlán, a lake surrounded by vocanoes & described as one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. This opportunity will allow me to immerse myself in the Mayan culture as well as increase my fluency in Spanish and help bring me closer to God.
The Friends of San Lucas mission ask for a $30/day donation to cover the cost of living at the parish, so I am asking for your help to raise $3500. This will cover the $2000 donation needed for my time in San Lucas Toliman as well as the cost of travel.
Thank you so much for your generosity & God bless!
