Sara Hayes Medical Emergency Fund

- Sara Marie Christopher Hayes - A month ago, Sara, a Type 1 (juvenile onset) diabetic suffered a devastating medical emergency. Admitted to Ball Memorial Hospital in Muncie to treat diabetic keto-acidosis and in the middle of kidney dialysis, Sara's heart and lungs became got too tired to function. Sara "coded" with no palpable pulse and no respirations. The hospital staff were successful at resuscitating her and she spent the next week in a drug induced coma and on life support. Further tests revealed she had suffered brain damage due to hypoxia. In the weeks following, Sara's body healed but her brain continues to lag behind and the Drs say she will not gain 100% of her neurological capabilities.
Just 2 years ago, Sara suffered her first near-fatal event. After suffering a fall, undetected to the naked eye her soft tissue began to necrose under the skin. This resulted in a deep infection that had penetrated all the way into her hip joint and she eventually became septic. Ever the brave fighter and risking death from sepsis without a total leg amputation, Sara elected to undergo 8 very extensive operations to remove and reconstruct the damaged tissue, muscle, and bone with 10 months in the hospital in an effort to save her leg in hopes that she would be able to walk again and not be a burden to her family. The months of IV antibiotics killed off what kidney function she had left from a lifetime of diabetes resulting in the need for dialysis every 2 days for the rest of her life or if/when she qualifies for a kidney transplant. Mostly successful, Sara still has 2 legs and uses a wheelchair to get around. She is able to use a walker for very short distances but with great pain as most of the joint has been destroyed. I have posted photos to illustrate just how complex her medical care was/is.
Today Sara is making very slow but positive progress and remains in Ball Hospital as she awaits transfer to an available and appropriate facility. Her Drs are planning for weeks to months in a Neurological Rehabilitation Facility with weeks to months of in-home followup rehabilitation. Monte Troxell, her longtime and devoted companion spends the evenings/nights in her room as her Primary Medical Support person and I spend the days/afternoons. We feed her meals, hold her head when she pukes, scratch her back when she itches, and wipe her tears when she hurts. Sara never complains about the endless pokes, prods, and procedures taking everything she has to endure more bravely than anyone I've ever known. And what happens all too often with families these days the 2 medical emergencies has all but wiped out Sara's family finances. Monte is a musical event promoter and has been unable to secure new contracts as he provides for Sara's primary medical care at home and when she is in the hospital which seemingly at times an insurmountable task. I am retired with a simple pension and provide financial aid when I can as often as I can as does Sara's mother.
Our hope for this campaign is to raise funds to help cover 2 of the 3 months anticipated recovery time and give them some breathing room:
(1) Sara's secondary medical expenses as her primary costs are covered by insurance, so she can get the best of medical care.
(2) Sara's family household expenses for 3 months so this brave young woman has a home to come home to when she completes rehabilitation.
(3) Help with cost relief for Sara's Primary Care Giver travel expenses (as they are expected to exceed $300 per month) to be a part of her neurological recovery.

Sara graduated from Southport High School in 1996, got married, raised a family, and became a Director for Scholarship/Talent/Beauty contests in an effort to provide an opportunity for children and young adults build confidence and self-esteem. We would now wish to help Sara have an opportunity for a better quality of life. Any amount would be deeply appreciated and if you cannot assist financially, maybe you might help by forwarding this campaign to all of your social media friends and contacts or maybe post your stories and photos from her happier days.

Lets get Sara home once again and give her one more chance to battle this insidious disease that is Type 1 Diabetes.

Thank you one and all, Brian Christopher, her proud and humbled father
