Sara's campaign for Christies/ Street Child

Donation protected
Hello and thank you for taking the time to visit my fundraising page.

As a means of introduction my name is Sara and on the 16th September 2019, I will be climbing Mount Kilimanjaro alongside my Auntie Soraya to raise funds for two spectacular causes the Christie Charitable Fund and Street Child. As someone who is not the fittest the thought of climbing Kilimanjaro is a very challenging feat. However, my Auntie turns 60 next year, so I am not quite sure for which one of us the challenge is greater.

The Christie Charitable Fund

According to Cancer Research at present every 2 minutes someone is diagnosed with cancer. Moreover, Macmillan Cancer Support estimates that by 2020 in the UK, cancer will affect 1 in 2 people . These statistics highlight that cancer is a growing concern, likely to affect ourselves or someone close to us in the future.

For those of you who have endured or witnessed cancer and its debilitating effects, you will be aware that it is an awful disease. The way that cancer can consume and take over an individual’s body is frightening and those who have fought and continue to fight cancer are amongst the bravest people I have ever encountered.

On my maternal side, all my female relatives have suffered from cancer. My Grandma, my Auntie Afshan and my Mum. While my Grandma and Auntie are both breast cancer survivors, on the 24th March 2019 my Mum, Iram-Zara, lost her 21-month battle to clear cell, endometrial cancer.

For those lucky enough to have been with my mum throughout this almost two year ordeal, they will know that we spent much of our time recollecting good memories, laughing, smiling and making the most of the precious time that we had with her.  My mum accepted that this was God’s plan, she never complained or questioned her faith and she never wanted to burden her children or family. The way that she handled everything was truly inspirational and I am beyond grateful and proud to call myself her daughter.

Words will never accurately describe how deeply I miss my mum and how I will continue to for the rest of my life. My mum really was everything to me and my brothers. Our confidant, our protector, our advisor, our friend. Reliable, kind, uniquely wise, intelligent, beautiful, funny, stable. Mum was the rock of our entire family, immediate and extended.

Once we found out that mum was palliative I began to discreetly record her. In one of the voice notes I have of her, she says: “I hope that in 20 years the Christie’s Clinic will not exist. Because there will be a cure.” It is with this mantra that I hope to raise money for the Christie Charitable Fund.

The Christie Charitable Fund fundraises for a range of projects and initiatives for patients at the Christie Hospital. There are 4 main areas in which money is used: research, care and treatment, education and extra patient services. Aside from raising funds for life saving research, the care, treatment and extra patient services at the Christie’s hospital allows patients who are suffering from cancer to be looked after in a holistic way. For example, the money raised allows the Christie’s to continually provide funding for the cancer information centre; wig fitting service and ultimately help patients and their families cope with the effects of treatment.

The impact of fundraising for the Christie’s:

£1 could pay for an aromatherapy stick used in complementary therapy.
£100 could pay for art materials for art therapy sessions for one month.
£400 could pay for cryogenic gloves to protect fingernails when undergoing chemotherapy.
£5000 could pay for two patients to undergo full molecular profiling as part of the Target research project.
£10000 could purchase fluoroscopy equipment for the medical imaging department.

Street Child

My mum, as a Development Economist, would often engage me in conversations centred around the inequalities that exist within our world, always trying to find solutions to macro and micro issues. In particular, she spoke of children’s rights to education globally as a fundamental human right.

Therefore, in a similar vein, as a tribute and legacy for my mum I would like to help raise funds for Street Child.  Street Child is dedicated to empowering vulnerable children through education in the world’s hardest to reach and most remote locations.

At present there are 121 million school-aged children around the world who are not in education, which is deeply concerning. Similarly, more are in school but failing to learn because the resources simply aren’t good enough.

Street Child prides itself on fighting for a world where it is unacceptable for a child not to be in education.

The impact of fundraising for Street Child of Nepal:

£30 can send a child to school for a year
£200 can pay a rural teacher’s salary for a year
£1000 can refurbish and resource a rural school
£2500 can help a rural community gain a first ever school
