Help Sarah Fight Liver Cancer
Donation protected
Sarah is 31 years old and calls Kansas City her home. Despite her incredibly active and fit lifestyle (swimming, biking, running, volleyball, softball, yoga), last year Sarah was inexplicably diagnosed with Crohn's Disease, PSC, and finally bile duct cancer at the end of summer, which usually affects patients who are between 50-70 years of age. Sarah needs everyone's help to share her story, and any who feel led to contribute directly to support Sarah in her cancer battle, your donations will help contribute to her survival.
In short, this form of cancer is rare- not known is much about how it develops or how to treat it, but a potential liver transplant would eliminate all of her conditions. Sarah underwent chemo and radiation treatments while the search was on for a compatible living donor.
In less than three months, a matching liver donor was miraculously found and the transplant was scheduled shortly before Christmas. If successful, this would boost Sarah's survival chances from 8% to 80%. However, on the day before surgery in preparation for the procedure, doctors made the shocking discovery that the cancer had spread outside Sarah's liver so the transplant had to be aborted.
In Sarah's words, "I am devastated. My family and friends are devastated. There's no sense in pretending that everything is OK - it's not. I have incurable cancer." 5-year survival rates are less than 5% where the disease is inoperable, as with Sarah. Sarah's new treatment goal and best shot is to extend her life long enough to find a cure. Sarah will have to be on chemotherapy for the rest of her life.
Sarah’s costs are overwhelming despite her insurance- much more than any one person or family and friends alone can supplement, much less months of lost income while she was out of office throughout her September and January cancer treatments. Sarah needs help with bills, treatment costs, and we have found that the new gluten and corn-free diet she has been directed to is expensive.
I am writing to ask your help to spread the word about Sarah’s fight against liver cancer and the resulting financial anvil she must carry just to survive, please share this page. And I am asking for financial support for Sarah, please help stand up with her in defiance of her cancer. Any donation is greatly appreciated as well as prayers.
For those who know Sarah, we are inspired by her as she exemplifies resilience, perseverance and strength. One of Sarah’s favorite quotes is, “You're braver than you believe, and stronger than you seem, and smarter than you think.”
