We’re off to the ancient MORTIMER FOREST (Ludlow) a week on this #bankholiday Sunday (5 May) for a beautiful 9 hike, followed by a lovely meal in the foodie capital of #Shropshire.
Mortimer Forest was originally made up of ancient royal chases and deer parks, was named after the Mortimer Family, Norman Lords who held power over the region for some 300 years. It is now managed by Forestry England.
The Trail climbs through this vast ancient hunting forest in stages, sometimes up steep woodland paths, sometimes on gentle forest tracks and sometimes across high terrain ablaze with bluebells in May and June.
We take a lovely long rest (for a bring your own picnic) at the summit of High Vinnalls for views in all directions, taking in the Malverns, the Black Mountains, Bannau Brycheiniog (Brecon Beacons) and, on a fine day, the mountains of Snowdonia.
***We really hope a few people are able to
join us (as recently the numbers have been low and this makes it difficult for us to keep the walks going).
A relaxed pace to enjoy the beautiful surroundings (it’s worth noting a small group of members, with a range of skills levels and abilities, have expressed an interest in joining us on this trail). We hope you might be as interested in tackling this, longer than we usually do trail, which will be a challenge for us as well.
This promises to be the best trail we have done so far and a wonderful day out for everyone (the meal after is optional as always).
You will need to be able to drive to the meet point.
From Cov the drive to the meet point is 1hr 48 mins approx and 75 miles.
Train is a hefty £35+ return and takes 2hrs 45 mins very approx. So we suggest driving would be the best option.
This is a circular trail with a short drive to the meal after we have completed the walk.
Allow 4-5 hours very apprpx for the trail and extra time for the (optional) meal on top after…
***Given the distance, steep sections, exposed rocks and roots, along with areas being muddy after wet weather this walk is designed for serious walkers with appropriate footwear and equipment.’
MEET LUDLOW. Please refer to your Booking Link Email for all the details you need.
Everyone welcome!
PLEASE bring warm, waterproof layers and wear sturdy, non-slip, waterproof, high ankle walking boots.
The pace will be moderate to enjoy the views and experience…take photos etc…
