A story about a dog.

Months ago, a wonderful human named Sam was on a day trip visiting the town of Izamal Mx. A sweet & skinny homeless dog started following him around. As Sam was only visiting, he couldn't do much, but he couldn't stop thinking about her.

Once back in the US, he contacted me to see if it was possible to find her and try to get her to the US. He wanted desperately to adopt her. Izamal is a four hour round trip for me, but something in Sam's voice told me he needed this.

Gil and I drove out to look for the pup. We parked in a busy town square, and as I opened the passenger door, I saw her. She was sitting right next to us, as if she had been waiting patiently for us to arrive. A quick check with the local shopkeepers confirmed that she was a street dog. They fed and loved her but quickly gave me their blessing to take her home.

We went straight to the vet. The pup had a transmissible cancer that urgently needed chemo, but her body was too weak. We started with vitamins and tried to fatten her up a bit. No matter how much she ate, her weight was unchanged, but eventually she was strong enough to start chemo.

Two days later, she crashed. She stopped eating. Then she vomited blood. She couldn't breathe. The vets did everything possible to save her, but she died.

That was one week ago today, and the pain of it is still excruciating. I can't stop crying for her and for all the street dogs who deserved more.

Why isn't someone doing something!?!

Today I woke up and remembered that WE are that someone - you and me and everyone who supports this rescue. We will do something, because no one else is coming. We will do something, because they need us.

Her name was Oliva.

Please donate in her honor to help me continue spaying and neutering / $25 will change the world for one dog.

With love,
Heather
