90-YEAR-OLD HURDLE MILLS VETERAN THREATEN WITH ARREST OVER COWS
Person County Korean War Veteran Henry Pleasant has been given until Tuesday by the County’s animal control to contain his cows…or else.
The 90-year-old farmer admittedly has a serious fence problem that he’s been trying to fix, but the elderly man is overwhelmed. He recently had a fence company give him an estimate for the work, but the costs are into the thousands of dollars, and that’s money the Hurdle Mills man just doesn’t have.
The 98-acre farm has been in the family since 1926. The North Carolina man has owned livestock all his life, and caring for his cows gives him his will to live.
Neighbors have been flooding the county’s 911 system with complaints of cows on the loose for years and sadly even taken to Facebook recently to ridicule the elderly man. The Veteran’s son and grandchildren help mend fences on weekends but even their herculean efforts aren’t enough.
Animal Control finally told the 90-year-old, who is the sole caretaker of his sick wife, that if they get one more cow call after Tuesday he’ll be criminally charged and a judge will be forced to issue an order to take his pets away (yes, we’re talking about the cows). Mr. Pleasant has been cited for this issue once before but the charge was dismissed.
This Saturday morning, the family will be on the farm trying to fix the fences and are hoping…praying for help. They’re asking for volunteers who know how to fix fences, augers, supplies, tractors and a miracle, so Henry Pleasant’s Cows won’t be taken away.
