¿Quienes somos?

Somos Iñigo y Ana, dos amantes de la naturaleza que llevamos 9 años viviendo en Tanzania. Somos realmente conscientes de la tensa situación entre humanos y vida silvestre que ha estado sucediendo durante generaciones desde que llegamos. Un día conocimos a Askari y decidimos al menos intentar hacer algo. Fue entonces cuando decidimos crear Wapi Tembo Conservation, una ONG para ayudar a la conservación de los diferentes ecosistemas de África.

Save Askari The Lion es una campaña dedicada a la conservación de la biodiversidad de Enduimet WMA (Wildlife Management Area) en el Norte de Tanzania, con el objetivo principal de proteger a las familias de leones de la caza furtiva y represalias, mediante el uso de collares GPS, que permitan rastrear el movimiento y comportamiento de estas familias, para así prevenir futuros ataques o conflictos con la tribu Maasai.


El conflicto entre la vida salvaje y la comunidad Maasai


Askari, es el león dominante de una familia de 13 integrantes en la Reserva de Enduimet. Del idioma suajili (soldado o vigilante), Askari adquiere su nombre por la relación que existe entre el león y su hábitat, ya que al ser el depredador principal y regular el número de herbívoros y los mantiene saludables, previene la erosión del ecosistema y ayuda a mantener el frágil y complejo equilibrio del hábitat, lo que lo convierte en el guardián de la biodiversidad.


Los leones conviven desde hace cientos de años con la Tribu Maasai en el mismo territorio, manteniendo una relación de gran importancia y respeto que en un principio promovía el equilibrio natural. Hoy en día, esta relación comienza a romperse, ocasionado en gran parte por el aumento de la población y del ganado doméstico; el cambio acelerado que ha traído la globalización a su estilo de vida, costumbres y tradiciones; la carencia de planeación de usos de suelo dentro y fuera del área de conservación, y por los efectos del cambio climático. 



Todos estos factores, favorecen el rápido deterioro y degradación de los hábitats en Enduimet, reflejado en la disminución de antílopes y otros mamíferos, así como la extinción de plantas endémicas. Esto genera una tensa situación entre la vida salvaje y el humano, porque la escasez de comida de los depredadores y el sobrepastoreo del numeroso ganado maasai, favorecen los continuos ataques por parte de los leones, que encuentran al ganado como una presa fácil.


Estos ataques desencadenan un escenario de deterioro y venganza, donde los guerreros maasai asesinan a los leones en represalia, reduciendo el número de ejemplares, al punto en el que el león ha llegado a convertirse en una ESPECIE EN PELIGRO, al borde de la desaparición en el área del Kilimanjaro.



Nuestro plan para resolver este conflicto


SIMBA PROJECT es un proyecto que ideamos en WAPI TEMBO CONSERVATION, con el objetivo de buscar la resolución sustentable de conflictos mediante el empoderamiento de las comunidades, para que a través de la educación ecológica y consciente, puedan convertirse en el punto clave de la conservación y regeneración de su hábitat, comprendiendo la importancia de los leones en la salud del ecosistema, y la biodiversidad de plantas y animales en cara al futuro, tanto para Enduimet como para la propia tribu.



En paralelo a la educación ecológica, se pretende iniciar un plan de monitorización activo de leones, mediante el uso de dispositivos de rastreo en una hembra de cada manada y el patrullaje constante de guardabosques. Con esto conseguiremos llevar a cabo un seguimiento de las familias de leones en la reserva, que permita alertar a la comunidad Maasai y puedan proteger a su ganado de posibles ataques, antes de que estos ocurran. 


¿A dónde van las donaciones?


Creemos firmemente que podemos evitar la desaparición de esta especie, pero somos conscientes de que no podemos hacerlo solos y que necesitamos toda la ayuda posible. Por ello, hemos creado Save Askari The Lion en la plataforma de GoFundMe, una campaña de recaudación de fondos que nos permitirá ponernos manos a la obra con el proyecto, con un costo aproximado de € 7,900 / $ 9,443 / £ 6,783. Con tu aportación, contribuyes en la compra del material de rastreo que nos permitirá monitorear a las familias de leones (GPS, collares, equipo electrónico, etc.), contratar a los guardias y el material y recursos necesarios para llevar a cabo el seguimiento, así como la ayuda veterinaria para la colocación de los collares GPS.

Who are we?

We are Iñigo and Ana, two nature lovers who have been living in Tanzania for 9 years. We are truly aware of the tense human-wildlife situation that has been going on for generations since we arrived. One day we met Askari and decided to at least try to do something. It was then that we decided to create Wapi Tembo Conservation, an NGO to help conserve the different ecosystems of Africa.

Save Askari The Lion is a fundraising campaign dedicated to the biodiversity conservation of Enduimet WMA (Wildlife Management Area) in North Tanzania, with the only purpose of protecting its lion families from poaching and retaliation, through the use of GPS collars and monitoring which will allow us to track their movement and behaviour, in order to prevent future attacks or conflicts with the Maasai tribe.



The conflict between wildlife and the Maasai community


Askari, is the dominant lion of a family of 13 members in the Enduimet Reserve. From the Swahili language (soldier or guard), Askari acquires its name from the relationship between the lion and its habitat, since he is the main predator and regulates the number of herbivores and keeps its herds healthy, also prevents the erosion of the ecosystem and helps maintaining the fragile and complex balance of the environment, making him the guardian of biodiversity.



Lions have lived with the Maasai Tribe in the same territory for hundreds of years, maintaining a relationship of great importance and respect that initially promoted a natural balance with wildlife. Today, this relationship has begun to break down, caused mainly by the population and domestic livestock increase; the accelerated changes that globalization has brought to their lifestyle, customs and traditions; the lack of land use planning in and outside the conservation area, and the effects due to climate change.



All these factors favor the rapid deterioration and degradation of the habitats in Enduimet, reflected in the decrease of antelopes and other mammals, as well as in the extinction of endemic plants. These consequences, create a tense situation between wildlife and humans, because the scarcity of food for predators and the overgrazing of the numerous Maasai cattle, encourage the constant attacks by lions, which find cattle as easy preys.



These attacks trigger a scenario of deterioration and revenge, where Maasai warriors kill the lions in retaliation, reducing the number of members, to the point where the lion has become an ENDANGERED SPECIES, on the verge of disappearing in the Kilimanjaro area.


Our plan to solve this conflict


SIMBA PROJECT was created by WAPI TEMBO CONSERVATION team, with the aim of finding a sustainable resolution for human-wildlife conflicts through the empowerment of communities, so that through ecological and conscious education, they can become a key point in the conservation and regeneration of their habitat, understanding the importance of lions to maintain a healthy ecosystem, as for the biodiversity of plants and animals facing the future, both for Enduimet and the tribe itself.



In parallel with the ecological education, it is intended to initiate an active monitoring plan for lions, through the use of tracking devices on the dominant female of each pride, and the constant patrolling of rangers. These will allow us to carry out a follow-up of the lion families in the conservation area, preventing the Maasai community so they can protect their livestock and be ready in case of possible attacks before they occur.



Where do the donations go to?


We firmly believe that we can prevent the disappearance of this species, but we are aware we cannot do it by ourselves and so we need as much help as possible. For this reason, we have created Save Askari The Lion in GoFundMe, a fundraising campaign that will allow us to get to start the project, with an approximate budget of € 7,900 / $ 9,443 / £ 6,783. With your contribution, will help us affording the purchase of the tracking material that will allow us to monitor the lion families (GPS, collars, electronic equipment, etc.), transport and logistics, lion rangers salaries and the material and resources necessary to carry out the monitoring; as well as veterinary support collaring the lionesses.
