Save Australia's Threatened Species

Donation protected
Australia is facing the worlds’ worst mammal extinction rate, and the recent natural disasters that have battered the country have the potential to put further pressure on our unique and fragile wildlife. The 2019/2020 Black Summer Bushfires are just one example of the increasing climate threats to Australian biodiversity, with an estimated 3 billion native animals killed or otherwise affected.

Donate today to help secure a future for Australia's iconic wildlife!

Modern, conservation-based zoos & aquariums play an active and critical role in the long-term protection efforts of threatened species, including:
  • Rescue and rehabilitation of injured wildlife
  • Conservation breeding and breed for release programs
  • Species education and public advocacy messaging via ambassador animals
  • Research into threats and disease of threatened species
  • Field work such as population tracking, habitat analysis and disease management
Australian zoos, aquariums and wildlife parks are invested in driving positive outcomes for native wildlife.

For these important conservation actions to take place, a government endorsed Conservation Recovery Plan must first be developed. This is a lengthy process containing numerous rounds of expert consultation with:
  • First Nations People
  • Species experts
  • Habitat ecologists
  • Government officials.
Once approved, the formal species Conservation Recovery Plan is put into action. Many participants are involved to implement the plan, with zoos, aquariums and wildlife parks being vital for success.

THE SOLUTION TO A SECURE FUTURE FOR BIODIVERSITY:
The Centre for Species Survival (CSS) Australasia is a partnership between the International Union for the Conservation of Nature – Species Survival Commission (IUCN-SSC) and the Zoo and Aquarium Association, Australasia (ZAA). The Centre is made up of a high performing team, brought together to assess the extinction risk of Australian threatened species, and to facilitate collaboration on conservation planning to maximise positive impact for the long-term recovery of threatened native species. This work is funded through ZAA’s charitable arm, the Wildlife Conservation Fund.

Utilising our unique network and knowledge, the CSS Australasia & ZAA support native species conservation from assessment through to action: The CSS Australasia works with the Australian Federal and State Governments and the Federal Threatened Species Scientific Committee (TSSC) on species assessment and conservation planning. With a species assessment complete and recovery plan endorsed, action to conserve the species is mobilised through ZAA’s network of conservation based, welfare accredited zoos, aquariums, and wildlife parks.

THE ENTIRE PATH TO THREATENED SPECIES RECOVERY CAN BE SUPPORTED VIA OUR UNIQUE SKILLSET AND NETWORK

WE NEED YOUR HELP TO SAVE AUSTRALIA'S UNIQUE WILDLIFE
Through these efforts, the trajectory of threatened species can be improved. The federal government’s pledge to halt species extinction requires all hands-on-deck. Help support species recovery via the Australasian CSS and ZAA’s conservation-based welfare accredited zoos, aquariums, and wildlife parks.

All donors will be recognised on our website for your contribution to securing a future for Australia’s native species. Contact our friendly team about bespoke recognition or the opportunity to sponsor a threatened species.

The ZAA Wildlife Conservation Fund is a registered charity, donations of $2 or more are tax deductible.
