Save BMX Flatland with Huffjam

Hi, my name is Bryan Huffman and I'm a BMX flatland rider. For those who do not know what BMX flatland is, flatland is a discipline of Freestyle BMX riding where tricks are performed by spinning and balancing on a 20 inch bike in a variety of unexpected positions mostly done on pegs. Riders compete at contests where typically they have two timed contest runs where they try to do the most difficult and creative tricks without touching down off the bike.

For 3 years I have put on and hosted a great flatland BMX event in Winston-Salem NC called Huffjam. It is held at a unique two story music venue called the Ramkat. It was my way to give back to the sport that I love and a way for me to help grow and promote both the sport and the town I live in. Our 2023 contest was actually the largest flatland contest in the last 9 years in the USA. I have put a ton of energy into the events and really wanted to create a fun and exciting atmosphere for both the competitors and spectators. I also wanted to focus on the amateur classes in order to help grow the sport.

This contest was part of the American Flatland Association (AFA) series, a contest series across the country with usually 4 different contests or stops in different states across the USA. Due to certain situations, the AFA will no longer be a functioning contest series for 2024. While I handled many aspects of the contest such as securing the venue and providing the amateur prizes, the AFA provided additional funding including the pro purse, insurance and trophies for the winners among other organizing duties. Not having an organized contest series is a huge negative for our sport and I really want to step in and still have Huffjam in order to motivate the riders and give them a spotlight to compete, hang out with other riders and generally just have a great event. Without a contest series, having this event is now more important than ever before.

Now I definitely do not mind funding as much as I can for the event and helping obtain prizes for the classes, but without the AFA, I'm going to need some assistance to pull this off. I will now be paying for the venue, DJ, trophies, insurance, prizes, pro purse and many other items involved with running a contest. Every single cent made with this will go straight into the contest, I am keeping none of it. I just want to have a great event in 2024 and have people walk away happy about being part of it. Also, spectators do not pay to enter the venue and watch the event. It's free and I really want to keep it that way.

For anyone who decides to contribute, I want to say thank you. You are helping out the flatland community and I really can't say thank you enough. If you cannot help or even if you can, please consider coming to the event on July 13th, 2024.
