Save Charlie: Confirm His FELV Status
Donation protected
This is Charlie, a stray cat who I've been caring for since November 2024. He's been roaming the streets and took a liking to my porch. He survived the winter, and I brought him to Windcrest Animal Hospital to get him vaccinated.
The goal was to work with Save the Animals local rescue to adopt him out. Unfortunately, Charlie tested positive for Feline Leukemia (FELV) on a SNAP test.
This rules him out for most small rescues as they don't have the capacity to care for FELV cats. FELV is a viral disease that weakens a cat's immune system and is spread through bodily fluids.
Charlie was adopted last week through a friend of a friend, who ensured that he would have a wonderful life with her as a single cat household. Four days later, she dropped him off in a carrier at a different rescue, with no warning. This small rescue is not able to care for him long term due to the potential FELV virus.
It is not fair to Charlie that he's been through so much lately, and I need to do right by him. This blood test will determine if he indeed has feline leukemia, and then I can create a plan for him. He will be able to either go to a FELV specialist shelter, or be clear of restriction and able to get adopted.
IDEXX 26355 PCR blood test: $180
office visit exam: $90
SNAP test: $45
CompAnimals is the rescue that he is currently staying at, which is 100% donations based out of the kindness of volunteers. Any remaining donations will go to CompAnimals for housing him.
