Comic Universe was forced to shut down on March 19th due to the Pennsylvania Governor's mandated closure of "non-life sustaining" businesses. When we started this campaign, we were projecting a May 1st opening. However Pennsylvania extended the closure of small businesses through at least June 4th which has forced many to permanently close. Governor Wolf decreed that Philadelphia and it surrounding counties would be the very last to open. Comic Universe is located in Delaware County and falls into this category so we must wait this out indefinitely or close for good.
This comic shop was the first in Delaware County and originally opened in 1979. It was on the verge of closing last year when the founder retired. I began coming to this store in 1984. Several years later I enlisted in the Marine Corps but always returned to this shop when I was home on leave.
Leading up to the store's closure, I began speaking with many of my fellow customers regarding how much this store meant to them. They were disappointment with its pending closure. Several of them told me that they would cease to collect comic books altogether if that was to happen. I made a decision; although I had zero retail experience I purchased the shop to keep our love of comics alive.
Little did I know, that in less than a year, this mandated closure would put both the shop and myself on the verge of bankruptcy. I have not taken home a penny in the past two months and will be using my stimulus check to aid the store. I am therefor asking for your assistance during this trying time to keep the shop and our love for comics alive.
