What’s At Stake?

Your neighborhood! As fellow neighbors on Awbrey Butte, we want to make you aware of a new development application for the empty 1.02 acre lot at the corner of Awbrey Road and Mt. Washington.

The developer plans to build a 4-story, 40-unit apartment building with commercial space (see Developer’s rendering above). Additional details on the project can be found at savethebutte.com .

Why You Should Care.

The corner of Awbrey and Mt. Washington is already a heavily trafficked intersection. Adding 40 apartments and significant commercial space into a one-acre parcel will add more than 300 daily trips on our already heavily traveled streets. This will create longer waits to enter or exit the community at Highway 20 and 97, Awbrey Road, Archie Briggs Road, and even Awbrey and Portland Ave. In the winter, the shade thrown by the proposed 4-story building will increase the slick, icy conditions that already exist on the Awbrey/Mt. Washington intersection. Additionally, there is concern about egress in case of a fast-moving wildfire.

This proposed project is simply not suitable for this site.

What your contribution will do.

Last year the developer pitched a similar project to Bend City Planning. More than 250 letters in opposition were sent. The proposed project was rejected, and despite the massive opposition, the developer is resubmitting plans, without any change in the size or scope of the project. We have assembled a group of neighbors to oppose this project and work towards a development that fits our neighborhood. Our group is called Save Compass Corner.

Your contribution will help fund ongoing litigation to stop or modify the development. Litigation is expensive and we are up against well-funded, out-of-state adversaries (they don’t live in the neighborhood, much less Bend or Oregon). Your contribution will help us do everything necessary to preserve our neighborhood and maintain traffic safety for all.
