In the midst of a pandemic, heightened lockdowns and international strife, we have been presented with a beautiful glimmer of light. I'm very proud to announce that Doggpound MMA has been crowned Top Choice Martial Arts School of 2021 in Brampton. We have taken this as a sign not only to not give up, but to keep pushing and do everything we have to do in order to keep our doors open, once we are allowed to reopen of course.
The government has given us guidelines of what they classify as an ‘essential’ business. What they don’t understand is the very integral and nuance support we provide as a mental and physical outlet for both children and adults.
Although we have resisted asking for any support up until this point, in hopes of this pandemic turning around, the time has finally come to turn to our community to help us stay afloat. The beautiful thing about community is that when you need them, they will be there. That is why I have dedicated my life and career to giving back and supporting my community in the best way I know how.
For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Master D. Mignon and I am the owner and Master of Doggpound MMA, Home of Mignon’s Martial Arts Academy of Champions.
My career highlights include:
• Teaching bullyproofing and self-defence in Peel Region Elementary and High Schools for over 25years
• Providing self defence classes and support to women in shelters
• Running programs for children with disabilities and special needs
• Teaching all types of security duties such as awareness, use of force & handcuffing
• Providing mentorship and inclusivity to different diverse groups within the community
Within the last 15 years of operating in Brampton as Doggpound MMA, we have shown an undoubting commitment to the children, parents and adults of the community. Doggpound is a martial arts school, however we teach much more than just kicking and punching. We provide lifelong skills for all of our young students and prepare them for the real world, based on my 3 primary principles: Discipline, Confidence and Respect. Everyone has the power and ability but few truly comprehend and discover their inner strength. I teach all of my students how to overcome their fears and control their inner strength so that they can achieve their positive goals.
Since the initial lockdown in March 2020, Doggpound’s door have been closed for 10 months to date. For only 2 of those months, we were open and operating at less than 30% of our capacity. With a rented space that is over 5000 square ft, along with ongoing bills, it has proven to be very hard to sustain, with no end date insight. Already in Brampton, four martial arts gyms have permanently closed down (that we know of) therefore we are turning to the community to ensure that this doesn’t happen to us.
At this time, we are reaching out to anyone who can offer any type of help or support in order for us to stay in business during these uncertain times. We are calling upon companies, sponsorships, current and past clientele and anyone that truly understands the positive effect this type of business can have on a community. If you are not in the position to help, I thank you so much for your thoughts and well wishes and just know how much you mean to us as well.
