Their Backstory
Fred and Ethel (aka Frethel) came into our lives just 2 months ago and have stolen our hearts and everyone who meets them. This bonded pair was found surviving together in an abandoned apartment in Texas and brought to Wisconsin by the incredible Brown Paws Rescue team. On their journey to Madison, they had a stop in Oklahoma where they went through some extensive dental work since their teeth were severely diseased from the years of neglect. As a result, they only have about 4 teeth left between them. After a couple weeks recovering in an amazing foster home we adopted them "as is" and we truly can't remember life without them. Despite their age, they have tons of energy and enjoy hiking, kayaking, cuddling and napping in our laps.
Recent Developments
Unfortunately, the dental work has not healed as well as we would've hoped and they both have several oronasal fistulas (gaping holes in their gums) that makes it so food can get stuck in their nasal cavity, causing discomfort (sneezing/coughing fits) as they to try and clear them out. If left untreated they can lead to infection and other serious complications affecting their quality of life. The cost of fixing these fistulas is going to be almost $5,000 between the two of them, but the risks of letting them go untreated and ending up in the emergency room is higher. Freddy's surgery is scheduled for Friday, July 31st at UW Veterinary Hospital and Ethel's scheduled for August 26th.
While their lives up to this point have not been easy, they are some of the most resilient and loving pups we have ever met. The healing and growth they have shown over these last 8 weeks is truly inspiring and we want to do everything we can to make sure they they have many happy, healthy years left!
