Bureaucrats want to destroy it. Residents want to save it.
Designed by Frank Lloyd Wright protege, Aaron Green, and built to house a primarily African-American population that helped build 93 Liberty ships in World War II, Golden Gate Village today is a vibrant, low- and very-low income community on the National Historic Register.
Residents of Golden Gate Village, the only family public housing in affluent Marin County (where only 2% of residents are people of color, it's the most racially disparate county in California,) are filing a lawsuit against the County of Marin and the Marin Housing Authority (MHA) to avoid losing their homes to a private developer aided by the MHA and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD).
Specifically, the suit will call for immediate repairs to residents' units after years of deferred maintenance, no displacement of residents, and the formation of a community land trust.
While attorneys are donating their time, the residents need to raise money for outside legal expenses, including expert witness fees, deposition fees, filing fees, and environmental and traffic consultations.
