IT'S ABOUT MORE THAN SAVING A ONE HUNDRED YEAR OLD BUILDING...
Established in 1923 by the Reverend L.W. Thomas, St, Thomas Primitive Baptist Church is located in Summit, OK (one of the few remaining all-Black communities in Oklahoma), and is in the National Register of Historic Places.
As you can imagine, standing and serving the community for almost one-hundred years has taken its toll. Although the exterior of the building is still sound, the floor of the sanctuary has partially collapsed and the ceiling has deteriorated (See attached photos). With the sanctuary no longer safe, the small, faithful congregation (30-35 members) has been forced, for the last two years, to hold services in the side building normally used as their kitchen.
As you can also imagine, a congregation this small simply doesn’t have the resources to make the necessary repairs alone. This is where you come in…
Estimates for the repair work, and our goal for fundraising, is $50,000.00. This will provide a new, safe, solid, concrete floor structure, replace the interior ceiling, insulate interior walls, bathroom updates, refinish existing pews, roof repairs, accessibility ramps and sidewalks, minor landscaping, etc., as well as any initial interior demolition required. Basically, repair, revamp, and revitalize, the entire sanctuary.
St. Thomas Primitive Baptist Church is about to celebrate their one-hundredth year. Our goal is to get this congregation back into their sanctuary in time for that celebration, if not sooner. But our primary goal is to give them back their house of worship.
Will you help us?
