Save Jessica's Organic Farm after Hurricane Milton
Donation protected
Who we are:
Jessica’s Organic Farm is one of the original organic growers in Florida. We have been providing local, organic food to the Sarasota-Bradenton area since 1979. The freshness and quality of our produce is well known and can't be beat. People from all walks of life have come to depend on our organic fresh-cut lettuces, greens, sprouts and root vegetables.
What we do:
In the past, we've donated large quantites of fresh produce to All Faiths Food Bank (about 50,000 lbs per year). We've supported gardening programs for kids, and have given away an estimated 170,000 starter plants to local schools. When Covid struck, we stayed open, and worked with the non-profit "Second Chance Last Opportunity" to distribute fresh food to over 400 needy families each week.
Why now:
On October 9th, Hurricane Milton made landfall near Siesta Key, and the center of the storm passed directly over our Sarasota farm. Recorded wind gusts were over 100 mph. Thanks to careful preparation, we had only minimal damage to our infrastructure, but in the morning we discovered extensive crop damage. We estimate the total losses to be over $25,000 in retail value.
- We lost all of our Cucumbers ($2,880)
- We lost 65% of our Arugula ($2,635)
- We lost 80% of our Lettuces ($12,280)
- We lost 75% of our Kale & Collards ($7,220)
- We lost all of our Moringa leaf, and many Moringa trees ($525)
In addition, all of our Banana plants were damaged.
The fields can be replanted, and damaged trees can regrow, but we need to raise at least $15,000 to offset the crop losses. This will keep our employees paid, and allow us to continue farm operations through the end of the season, and hopefully for years to come.
What it means:
Your donation would be a lifesaver. All of us at Jessica's would be immensely grateful for your help, and everyone who depends on our fresh, organic produce would benefit. There are less than 50 certified organic farms in all of Florida, and only a handful in the Tampa Bay Area. Jessica's Organic Farm is a community resource, and a "hidden gem" of Sarasota. We need your help to keep it going.
What to do:
Some of you may be dealing with your own hurricane recovery and difficulties - please donate only if and what you can, and please share this on your social media. Spread the word, let your friends and family know. Sincere thanks!
