A group of residents and sublease holders on a Queensland Government-owned island off Mackay in North Queensland, are locked in a David and Goliath encounter with Chinese developers.
The Queensland Government has transferred the head lease on picturesque Keswick Island to foreigners China Bloom (Hong Kong) Pty Ltd.
The fall out since mid 2019 has seen boat and air access impeded, facilities withdrawn, tourists and day-trippers warned off, turtle nesting grounds bulldozed and national parks locked. Residents and sublease holders fear this is a plan to force them off the island to make Keswick a playground for rich Chinese tourists and investors.
Their pleas for government intervention have fallen on deaf ears. The group is fighting the good fight but taking on a billion dollar Chinese developer is a daunting task for a group of Aussies with minimal resources and funds – it’s a fight that should alarm all Australians as China continues to buy up backyards and assets throughout the nation.
Any financial support would be appreciated – or even pen a letter of concern to your local Member of Parliament.

No doubt these sublease holders are going to have to face off in court. They have achieved what they have with a core group of dedicated people who have researched and lobbied for more than 2 years. Govt was hoping they would go away. They are facing a mammoth legal bill if it ends up in court. Then they lose everything. Surely you can support fundraising?
