Kurshonbrooke Lodge is a family owned and operated business in Brisbane. It has been operating for more than 30 years - offering riding lessons, equine assisted learning programs with multiple local schools and so much more. Now they risk losing it all!
The approval by Brisbane City Council of a Development Application for Kurshonbrooke Lodge is being appealed in the Planning and Environment Court by a selected few, some who do not even live in the local community. Initial estimates from legal specialists to fight this appeal is $150000 minimum which they can’t afford to fight on their own! In true community spirit – we can come together and help raise funds to assist with these costs – because action needs to be taken to ensure that we don’t lose this amazing, community minded, local business.

They’ve helped so many kids through emotional and traumatic events, offered positivity and rehabilitation to countless kids and adults for so many reasons and difficulties. History/Background
The land at 747 New Cleveland Rd, Gumdale was purchased by the Maidment family in 1986 with an established detached house. The property had very little vegetation and was also being used for horse agistment by the previous owners. The Maidment family continued this practice of horse agistment and, in about 1990, riding education commenced on the property to support the existing horse agistment activity. The land at the time was zoned Rural Residential under the Brisbane City Council Town Plan 1987.
In 1992, the family saw the demand for horse education and horse riding tuition and sought advice from Brisbane City Council Planning Officers on the requirements for those activities, including development for the purposes of horse riding training, horse riding, horse training, horse breeding, horse agistment, horse paddocking, horse stabling, produce store and filling.
In response to the enquiry from the Maidment family, the Council advised that a development approval was required to be lodged to use part of an existing building and erect and use a building and a structure on the land for the purposes of Agriculture B, Stables and Produce Store and carry out Filling, all as defined in the Brisbane City Council Town Plan 1987. The Maidment family acted in good faith on the Council’s advice and the development application was made in October 1992 and subsequently approved subject to conditions in December 1992. The Town Planning Consent Permit was issued in February 1993.
Two Building applications were lodged in 1993 for the stables and the roofed structure over the riding arena and were approved by the Council. The stables and roofed structure were then constructed and signed off in accordance with Council practices.
Since 1993, the lawful uses for Agriculture A, Agriculture B, Stables, Produce store and Detached house have continued. Subsequently, the property was purchased by immediate family members in September 2015.
Since 1993 the horse-related activities carried out on this property have been:
• riding tuition and education
• horse riding
• horse agistment
• thoroughbred racing and training
• breeding
• breaking in and training
• day and overnight camps/workshops for:
• children
• overseas visitors
• school-based traineeships
• toddler groups
• school groups
• sporting groups
• corporate groups
• Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) education and training
For the past 27 years, these activities have operated without incident or complaint. There has been enormous community support for the first and second generation families which continue to provide a safe learning and practical environment for a wide cross section of the community.
This establishment is one of the first Accredited Riding Centres in Queensland by Pony Club Australia (80 years in Australia) for their high standards of education and training and safe practice in the Equestrian industry. This initiative has been supported by Sport Australia through a Federal Government Grant.
