Kyle Rohweder Memorial Scholarship

Donation protected
Kyle Thomas Rohweder age, 25, passed away surrounded by his family on June 12, 2022 after an almost 3 year battle with pleomorphic liposarcoma. Born on November 2, 1996 at Rex Hospital, he was the cherished and beautiful son of Thomas and Elizabeth Cook Rohweder, brother of Austin Rohweder.

Kyle was diagnosed with cancer two months after his college graduation, so he was not able to secure a job prior to that time. Kyle enjoyed his time with friends as he had to deal with many rounds of radiation, 2 major life saving surgeries and many, many cycles of chemo. Kyle was our “Superman” and our hero, he was courageous, strong and resilient in every way possible. We gained our strength from Kyle as we were fighting this evil cancer with him.

Kyle was very passionate about his KA chapter at Roanoke College and decided prior to his death that he wanted to establish a scholarship fund in his name. He wanted to be able to assist a KA brother with a scholarship each year. The Kyle T Rohweder, ’19 Endowed Scholarship fund will be awarded to a student who is a member of Kappa Alpha and embodies the qualities most admired in Kyle: strength, courage, persistence, discipline and compassion.

In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to Kyle’s scholarship fund or you may continue to donate to this Go Fund Me campaign as all funds will help with the KA Endowed Scholarship and funeral costs.  Here is the direct link to Kyle's scholarship fund is below:  https://www.givecampus.com/campaigns/28312/donations/new

A Time to Celebrate Kyle's Life and Share Memories will be held on Saturday, June 18th beginning at 4 pm in the Chapel of Mitchell Funeral Home. The family will receive friends following. Wearing bright, casual clothing would be appreciated. The service will be live streamed and recorded for those unable to attend.  https://www.dignitymemorial.com/obituaries/raleigh-nc/kyle-rohweder-10787691

Kyle's Story:

Kyle having just graduated from Roanoke College in Salem Virginia in May 2019 with a bachelor's degree in Health and Exercise Science and a minor in Public Health Studies was ready to find a job that fulfilled his passion of helping others achieve their optimum health and fitness. He was working as a lifeguard manager at a local pool when his world was suddenly turned upside down. He started having trouble breathing and after a series of tests, he was diagnosed with Liposarcoma.  Liposarcoma is a rare form of cancer and the location of his tumor is even more rare being in the anterior mediastinum (front of the heart cavity). This young man whose heart is about helping others is now in need of life saving cancer treatments and surgery to save his own life.

Treatment Plan:

Kyle has just completed 5 weeks of daily radiation treatments to kill/neutralize the sarcoma cells at UNC Medical Center in Chapel Hill.   This neutralization keeps the cancer from spreading.  The next six weeks of waiting  is time to allow Kyle's body to recover and any possible inflammation caused by the radiation to the sarcoma will also decrease.  Kyle is scheduled to have a PET scan on November 5th.  He will also meet with the surgeon that afternoon to have a consultation and review the PET scan results which will help determine if Kyle is ready for open heart surgery to remove the mass.  The surgery is  expected to take place sometime in November or December.  After surgery, additional treatments will likely include more radiation and most likely chemotherapy.  These treatments will continue well into 2020.

With Kyle unable to work and now living at home with his parents while he fights this battle, he does not qualify for any financial assistance. His bills are already piling up.

The money being raised is for several specific needs:

·         2019 and 2020 insurance deductibles
·         Out of pocket insurance co-pays
·         Non-covered procedures
·         Travel expenses for appointments and procedures at UNC Medical Center
·         2 weeks of hotel costs after open heart surgery
·         Potential home nurse assistance
