Save Lahaina's Banyan Tree (Maui, Hawaii)
Donation protected
Hi, my name is Aadi. I am thirteen years old and I live in California.
The recent wildfires in Maui have caused extensive damage to the town of Lahaina. I am hoping to raise money to save the Banyan tree in Lahaina. Last year, my family and I went to Maui for the first time. We went to the town of Lahaina and saw the gigantic and historic Banyan tree. It was the first time I had seen a Banyan tree and it seemed to give life to the surrounding area and the whole town. I was fascinated with its aerial roots that sprout from its branches and reach the soil.
This Banyan tree was a gift from India in 1873, and it was planted at the request of Queen Keōpūolani, queen of Lahaina at the time. It arrived in Lahaina as an 8-foot sapling, and it has grown to more than 60 feet high and over 1/2 an acre wide, becoming the largest banyan tree in the United States, and one of the largest in the entire world. The recent fire in Lahaina has charred the Banyan tree, and according to many officials, people are unsure if it will survive. In Hindu mythology, the Banyan tree stands for longevity and fulfillment of wishes. If the Banyan tree survives, I believe it will give the people of Lahaina hope that the town will reemerge stronger than ever.
I am hoping we can all contribute to save the historic Banyan tree. Please donate generously. No amount is too small. I will be sending the total funds raised to the Lahaina Town Committee.
