Save Lisbon's Black-Owned Businesses in Bica

My name is Margo Gabriel. I am an American freelance writer living in Lisbon, Portugal. I am also a food writer. I was introduced to Hernâni Miguel's incredible wine bar and live music venue while on vacation 2 years ago. The evening featured great food, great wine and great music. It was such a memorable night that I vowed I would move to Portugal one day.

That 'one day' became a reality this fall when I relocated to Lisbon from Boston this year. My second night here, most of the streets were empty and restaurants suffered a huge financial loss due to lack of tourism. that hit every business hard due to the rapid spread of the novel coronavirus, COVID-19, so I took a chance wandering into Bica searching for Tabernáculo by Hernâni Miguel. A local band performed as I found a cozy seat and before I finished my meal, I heard "Sister, how are you?" It was Hernâni making his rounds to each table chatting each customer up ensuring they had a great evening, and if you were lucky you shared a shot of gingja with him before the night was through. Hernani’s place is where you come to find community, talk about your day—life, love, politics—and how we’re all in this life together.

Hernani's place holds a magic I've never seen so genuinely unfold every night I step through the purple velvet curtains that sometimes feels like Lisbon is the center of the world. 

Tabernáculo by Hernâni Miguel opened in Bica in 2015 and has featured live music, authentic African and Portuguese cuisine for the past 5 years. The donations will help him keep the doors to this unique place. 


This GoFundMe will cover Hernâni and Mikas' monthly rental lease, expenses incurred during a 5 month closure due to COVID-19, operating costs and help them both keep their staff on payroll. Thank you for your contributions.

Era o Hernâni a fazer as suas rondas pelas mesas a conversar com cada cliente, garantindo que todos passavam um óptimo serão e, se tivéssemos sorte, partilhávamos um shot de ginja com ele antes de a noite acabar. O espaço do Hernâni é onde vens encontrar uma comunidade a falar sobre o seu dia – vida, amor, política – e sobre como todos estamos juntos nesta vida.

 

O espaço do Hernâni tem uma magia que nunca vi a espalhar-se de forma tão genuína todas as noites que cruzo as cortinas roxas de veludo e que faz com que, por vezes, Lisboa pareça o centro do mundo.

 

O Tabernáculo by Hernâni Miguel abriu na Bica em 2015 e tem oferecido música ao vivo e cozinha portuguesa e africana autênticas ao longo dos últimos 5 anos. Os donativos vão ajudá-lo a manter as portas abertas para este seu espaço único.
