Help Save Maui's Starving Cats & Kittens!

Tax deductible

Hello!

My brother Michael moved to Maui 16 years ago. He had hoped to rest and recuperate from a tragic injury that left him with significant pain and a permanent limp. Upon arrival, he immediately realized that there was a desperate need to care for the island's overpopulation of cats. He bought humane traps and helped set up spay and neuter clinics. Over time, he's helped get over 2,000 cats fixed and found homes for hundreds of desperate cats and kittens. He’s rescued terrified cats trapped inside car engines, thrown into dumpsters, and set on fire.

Though physically disabled and on a fixed income, Michael spends up to 6 hours every evening driving through town - his car loaded with food and fresh water. Each day he feeds over 50 separate cat colonies and supports nearly 400 healthy, fixed cats. He utilizes the humane practice of TNRM (Trap, Neuter, Return, Manage) to help keep the population down.

With Maui's mild climate, "Kitten Season" lasts all year, and the numbers are astounding. When a kitten is born, it often can survive just long enough to breed before it dies from starvation. The next batch of kittens suffers the same horrific fate in a never-ending cycle of doom and despair.

This is why it's so important to get them fixed and to help them survive. Cared for "Colony" cats can live out their lives peacefully without reproducing, and work together as a team to help new (unfixed) cats from entering their territory. Many of these cats are friendly and depend on my brother for their survival. Despite occasional donations, he still spends over $2,000 a month just on pet food alone.

Sad and exhausted, he struggles to feed everyone even during storms and hurricanes - in fact some of the only days he’s taken off in 16 years was to attend our father’s funeral. We've asked many animal groups for help, including Best Friends, who've admitted that they’re not in a position to help these homeless, discarded animals. The Maui Humane Society does what it can, but their resources are limited too.

Unfortunately, Michael is nearly out of money. With his meager savings depleted, there simply isn't enough food. Tragically, without immediate help, most of these cats will not only die of starvation, they will continue to breed out of control. I'm reaching out because I'm hoping that together, we can help save the cats of Maui. And my incredible brother!

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this. And for your kind heart.

With hope and gratitude,
Donna Willinsky
