URGENT HELP NEEDED to
SAVE MISSISSAUGA HUMANE SOCIETY (MHS)
After being in operation for over 20 years and having saved over 8,000 homeless dogs and cats, for the first time in its history Mississauga Humane Society is practically disabled due to the change of Board of Directors. Animal Rescue intake has almost come to a stop.
Recently, Lily Chan, the long time President and volunteer of 20 years, and Marlene Labog the Vice President, have been VOTED OUT ILLEGITIMATELY by the Board and WITHOUT GROUNDS. Lily & Marlene are both backbones of MHS.
MHS is a 100% Volunteer Run charity without a Shelter, a Facility or Paid staff. LILY CHAN is the longest serving volunteer who started since Day 1 in 1999. Under her leadership, she has created and successfully managed a Complex network of :
- Volunteers (Daily Incoming Emails & Calls, Cat Trapping, Cat Room Care, Transporting animals, Website and FB
Posting, Pick up of Donations etc)
- Foster Parents (Finding Foster Homes for Rescued Dogs & Cats)
- Vets (Providing Medical Services at much reduced rates).
- Pet Stores (Providing Cat Adoption Rooms)
- Pet Suppliers (Providing Food donations)
- Donors/Sponsors (Providing Funds for MHS)
For the last 15 years, MHS volunteers have been rescuing on average 500 homeless cats and dogs annually. Until recently, MHS has been taking in on average 45 homeless cats and dogs every month, providing them with preventive and medical care, and then foster care until they are ready for adoption. We rescue regardless of age, health and behaviour issues. There are always on average 200 cats and dogs in the care of MHS. There are Shadow cats, FIV cats, Feline Leukemia cats, Diabetic cats, Older cats, Older dogs, Dogs with Health or Behaviour issues and they are in loving Foster Homes. There are also Cats waiting for adoption at the Cat Adoption Room set up at several Pet Stores.
The new Board has very little knowledge and experience in the Animal Rescue work, or business sense. Under the leadership of LILY CHAN, for many years, over 85% of Income was spent on VET CARE. Unfortunately, for the new Board, ANIMALS are not their Priorities, but POWER & CONTROL. The removal of Lily and Marlene has already affected the Daily Operations of the Society's Rescue work. Since the 'New Board' has been in place about a month ago (April 25), several dogs and cats that needed help have been declined, and an owner of a 12 year old sick cat was even referred to Animal Services. There has been NO PLAN in place for the care of the current animals, or the animals in need in future. Most of the current Volunteers do not support the new Board. We know the number of animal intake will be MUCH REDUCED.. We are not sure if the new Board can achieve what has been achieved the last 15 years.
''WE WANT TO CONTINUE HELPING 500 HOMELESS CATS & DOGS ANNUALLY''
Unfortunately, the only way to achieve this goal is through legal proceedings against the current Board of Directors, who has changed MHS Bylaws to deny Volunteers the right to become Members. Right now, there are no members in MHS who are not the directors, which means the directors are not accountable to anyone. The new Board has used MHS funds to hire a lawyer to solidify this position. We need legal help to try to regain control over our organization so we can continue the normal Animal Rescue Intake as before.
We have set up this ''SAVE MISSISSAUGA HUMANE SOCIETY” Campaign. We are doing this ONLY for the sake of rescuing animals. We know there are many MHS Volunteers and Supporters that feel the same and will be supporting this cause. Please help SAVE MHS by donating as much and as soon as possible and please shareé
On behalf of the Animals, THANK YOU for your SUPPORT.
HISTORY OF MHS
MHS was set up 20 years ago in 1999. It was and still is a 100% Volunteer Run charity dedicated to rescuing homeless dogs and cats. It has a NO KILL policy. It does not have a shelter, a facility, or paid staff. It relies only on donations with no support from the Government, the City or the SPCA. Lily Chan is the longest serving volunteer and she has been leading MHS for the past 20 years. Lily is the reason for what MHS is now - a Reputable Animal Rescue group that is known for taking in unadoptable or less adoptable dogs and cats that even some shelters will not take in. With her dedication, diligence, and commitment, MHS has grown from a very small charity, rescuing just 50 animals in the first year, to rescuing 500 homeless dogs and cats annually on average. The hard work and valuable feedback of many volunteers have also contributed to MHS' success. Lily is always appreciative of their help and in return has the full support of most volunteers.
ABOUT LILY CHAN & MARLENE LABOG
Lily started volunteering for MHS since Day 1 in 1999. MHS was a small group that started with nothing. Since then, Lily has been working diligently for the last 20 years to help thousands of animals in need. Lily is the longest serving volunteer and is the reason for what MHS is now - a reputable animal rescue group that is known for taking in unadoptable or less adoptable dogs and cats that even shelters will not take. Lily would always go an extra mile for the animals in need.
Lily started the Dog and Cat Foster Programs to place the rescued animals in temporary homes until they are adopted. She runs the programs by finding foster homes for numerous homeless animals in need. Because of her hard work, these dogs and cats stayed in HOMES instead of a cages and kennels. Realising that MHS does not have a shelter and it would be hard to adopt the dogs and cats out, in 2009, Lily started the set up of the first MHS Cat Adoption Enclosure at a Pet Store (Petcetra). Since then, Lily was able to work with other pet stores like GLOBAL PET FOODS and PET VALU. As of now, MHS has 5 Cat Adoption Locations, and one even out of city. These Cat Adoption Enclosures have helped to find homes for hundreds of cats each year.
Lily also looks after FUNDRAISING, a very important part of the Charity, as the average monthly Vet Fees are from $25,000-$30,000. Lily has organized the two major Annual Fundraising Events – the PET FEST & WALKATHON & the STARLIGHT SOIREE, of course these could never take place without the help of a Team of Volunteers. Marketing MHS is also part of Lily’s scope of work. Lily is responsible for most of the website updates and the daily posts on the Facebook page that she started years ago and has about 6,000 followers. Not only is Lily conscientious, she also has business sense. For the past 20 years, Lily has approached and negotiated with many Vet Clinics. As a result, MHS receives very discounted rates for vet fees from 6 vet clinics. Lily also ensures that most of the MHS Funds are spent directly on animal care. Another important role Lily has is answering the daily, incoming MHS emails. These emails could be from the public, from the foster parents, volunteers & adopters. This easily takes up at least a couple of hours everyday. Lily’s own home is also a storage place for donations of pet food and supplies.
Besides the Day to Day Rescue work, Lily has also helped with the Animal Welfare of the City. In early 2014 Lily started a PETITION & CAMPAIGN to BAN 24/7 OUTDOOR CONFINEMENT of dogs in Mississauga. She arranged distribution of thousands of flyers in the city. She attended Council Meetings to appeal for those 24/7 CONFINED DOGS. MHS reached a MILESTONE as a result of her efforts. In December 2014 a NEW BYLAW was implemented in the City of Mississauga:
“ANIMALS MUST NOT BE TETHERED FOR ANY LONGER THAN A TOTAL OF 4 HOURS OUT OF EVERY 24 HOURS.”
Marlene, the VP, has also served MHS for several years. She works daily for the MHS cats and dogs just like a full time job, even though she has her own full time job. She traps, takes pictures, fosters, sets up Adopt-a-thons, does adoption screening, sends adoptive cat bios for the website, and supports multiple foster volunteers. She also runs around daily transporting Cats, picking up food donations, and delivering food to foster homes. She has also made multiple trips to the US to bring back rescued dogs. Her dedication for the animals in need is beyond words. She is one of MHS’ most hardworking volunteers and without her help, many things could not be done.
ON BEHALF OF THE ANIMALS IN NEED, THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT. Please SHARE this and forward to your network.
