The NSW Government has announced that it will grab nine holes from the only PUBLIC 18-hole championship golf course within 10 kilometres of the Sydney CBD for more community green space when the current management contract ends in June 2026.
This is an overstretch and will harm more people than it helps.
WE NEED YOUR HELP TO FIGHT BACK! The best chance to get this decision overturned is in the next six months.
As the busiest 18-hole golf course in Australia, Moore Park golf precinct hosted more than half a million people in the last 12 months with around 80% of golfers playing 18 holes. And its popularity is increasing every day for example the number of students and women taking lessons to get started in the game has almost doubled in five years.
Moore Park Golf Course was created for the working-class of Sydney and for more than 100 years has provided affordable and easily accessible golf for all ages, genders and abilities – from social players to golf tragics, the elderly keeping their exercise up and kids having a crack. They cannot afford private high-end golf facilities or transport to other 18-hole public courses that are a long way away.
The existing public parklands surrounding the golf course are incredibly under-utilised – you only have to walk through the 360 hectare Centennial Park to see for yourself - yet the current golf course represents only 12% of the total area.
As a nine-hole facility Moore Park will struggle financially to stay the course, as the income will drop significantly, paving the way for the NSW Government to hand over the remaining land to property developments to slap up thousands of new apartments which will need even more green space for their residents.
This land grab could be the death knell for other public golf clubs and sports facilities across greater Sydney and NSW. Revenue from the Moore Park golf precinct funds close to 50% of the other 35 sports and 120 fields at Centennial Park.
All funds raised will go towards a public campaign to convince the Government to reverse its decision. If there is any money left it will be directed to children so they can start their own golfing journeys at the Moore Park Golf Course.
