Imagine majestic, intelligent, and bonded Mute Swans – lifelong mates and their offspring – being killed. Imagine dedicated Mute Swan mothers, sitting on their nests weeks longer than necessary, not realizing that their babies will never hatch because the egg shells have been coated in oil, ending the development of the cygnets inside.
This is happening in Ontario. In the past 10 years over 1,200 Mute Swans have been culled (shot) in Canada and over 1,800 of their eggs have been destroyed.
Will you please support our work to save their lives?
These beautiful birds and their eggs are being destroyed due to misconceptions about their impact on wetlands and because they are sometimes labelled non-native. But research shows that they do not outcompete other waterbirds and they do not deplete food sources.
They are a naturalized species and have a rightful place in our wetlands: in fact, they have graced our waterways and nested in Ontario for 67 years or over 20 generations.
The Mute Swan Society was founded to protect them from these unnecessary and lethal actions, through education and advocacy. Read more at www.muteswansociety.org and @muteswansociety on Instagram and Facebook.
As a volunteer, I'm raising funds to support this lifesaving work.
We are an entirely volunteer organization – so all funds go towards protecting the swans, by being a voice for Mute Swans with policy makers; sharing information to increase public awareness; providing tools and resources so people can speak up for the swans; and advocating at events, meetings, and conferences.
Every dollar donated will help us educate the public and advocate for change so these beautiful, sentient animals have a chance to live their wild lives.
Please join us in protecting Mute Swans!
