Sanitation Workers in Pakistan as FRONTLINE soldiers against Coronavirus without any protection
Exposed to potentially deadly pathogens and now coronavirus, our sanitation workers need these SAFETY KITS.
The current crisis is going to continue to rage on in the weeks and months ahead, impacting the most vulnerable among us more severely than anyone else. As we try to find solutions to this crisis and appeal to people's sense of good, we must think of the workers who already face dire conditions every single day. Throughout Pakistan, the workers who oversee the sanitation system expose themselves to potentially deadly pathogens and horrific circumstances constantly. They put themselves in harm's way for no reason other than it is what they do and someone needs to do it. Recent study titled Shame and Stigma in Sanitation - Compromised Dignity, Safety and Employment Security of Sanitation Workers in Pakistan by Center for Law & Justice, a non-profit organization, reveals that these brave sanitation workers risk their lives for us, and yet in as compensation, they receive little respect, little money, and no safety net whatsoever.
The World Health Organization has set a campaign: the Safe Hands Challenge. Our Sweepers Are Superheroes campaign believes that it is a step in the right direction.
The coronavirus pandemic ought to serve as a wake-up call, highlighting the marginalization that sanitation workers (or sweepers, as Pakistanis call them) and the unacceptable treatment they have experienced for years now. Serving such an essential role in our society, these workers are true heroes walking among us, and we need to treat them as such. As we found in our "Shame and Stigma in Sanitation" study earlier this year, the sanitation workers in Pakistan (who physically enter sewers to clean them and collect solid waste) remain looked down upon throughout Pakistani society at large.
Our Fundraising Goal
As part of WHO's #SafeHandsChallenge, we are looking to put together and distribute safety kits to sanitation workers in Pakistan. These safety kits will emphasize the importance of hand-washing and sanitization, each one including a pack of surgical gloves, one N95 mask, and hygiene products such as soap and sanitizer.
We are seeking support to provide safety kits to at least 1,000 sanitation workers in Lahore and Faisalabad.
One safety kit for one sanitation worker costs $30.8 composing of following items to help them fight against COVID-19:
1-One pair of Gloves= $7.7
2-One N95 Mask= $13.2
3-One pair of Safety Googles= $5.7
4-Sanitizer 250 ml= $4.2
Total= $30.8
Your each $30.8 will help one sanitation worker to work safely in cleaning sewers and sweeping road.
For 1,000 workers the total amount is $30,800. All administrative and additional costs are borne by our volunteers. While every dollar toward this fundraising campaign helps, we have set a goal for ourselves: $30,000. At that level, we can distribute enough safety kits to make a real difference in Lahore and other parts of the country.

Why Does This Matter?
As we have seen around the world, this pandemic could devastate us if we do not take action right now. If we do not respond to this crisis properly, we are going to end up falling too far behind to respond to it at all. For the good of our sanitation workers and as one more defense against the virus, we need to provide these safety kits to our sanitation workers, whom we will rely on in the months ahead one way or another.
For most of these workers, sanitizer is an unthinkable luxury – which is an abomination when we consider the hazards that these workers face every day. We need to do this. Make your contribution now and show your support for our efforts at Sweepers Are Superheroes!
In addition to making a monetary contribution to this campaign, you can help us by sharing a link to the campaign on Instagram , Facebook , Twitter , and any other social media platforms you use. Tell all your friends and family about this initiative and let them know that you are on board with it.
We appreciate your support, and we thank you for your time.
