Save our Sparrow

Sparrow Karas is a 74 year old poet and treasure of the Ferndale community. She makes her daily rounds on foot (rain or shine), copying her late nights work at the local library and delivering her poetry prints alongside handmade dolls and crafted herbal air fresheners to her eager neighbors. She is a staple in the community, invoking thought and kindness everywhere she steps.

She has lived in the upper flat of a home for the last 30+ years and in the middle of a pandemic, she has been given 30 days to leave as the homeowners are looking for an immediate sale. So we are raising money to help her at least secure a downpayment for her home.

As she says,  she has finally come to a point where she "can finally feel other peoples love".  She not only wants to occupy her inner space but also the place she has always called home. When you visit with her in her home whether it's your first time or millionth, you always know that you belong. Her space has always been a place of community and imaginative thinking, just like her old classroom where she spent many years helping children find themselves. Although at times she might seem like it, she's not a fairy tale, she's very real. She reminds us that magic isn't something left for children's stories or in the imagination, but magic is a palpable love for simply experiencing life.
