Diane Harrington has spent decades working hard to save an ancient organic heirloom farm--a historical community landmark with rare native plants and animals. Besides its significance as the headwaters of the Squalicum Creek near Bellingham, WA, the peaceful, beautiful 20 acre farm has been cultivated with organic techniques for over 100 years, providing a showpiece of how production without sacrificing the native land or its creatures can be attained.
Now this natural treasure, with its picturesque view of Mt. Baker, is being threatened by development if Diane cannot save it. During the past year, Diane has been caring for her sick mother and has had less time to farm, thus impacting the sustainability of this labor of love. Now, since her mother’s death on Mother’s Day, Diane is struggling to keep her mother’s dying wish: to maintain the farm and save it from development. She is currently unable to pay the lease on the property or pay the bills on her organic greenhouse, so she is on the brink of losing it all.
It will take a year for Diane to "get back on her feet" and make a profit again, so we are reaching out to the kindness and generosity of friends and strangers in hopes of raising money for keeping up with the lease and paying for steady labor for the next several months until Diane can make the farm sustainable again.
