Brian McIntire and Thor Stephens opened the Precinct in the Spring of 2015, only a few weeks after the Supreme Court ruled that same-sex couples had the right to marry. It was the first Downtown Los Angeles gay bar to open in nearly two decades. Not only is Precinct the largest gay bar downtown, but it was also crucial to downtown's queer renaissance and redevelopment. Alongside other downtown queer/alternative spaces and institutions like Redline, New Jalisco, The Lash and DTLA Proud, Precinct is part of a family of inclusiveness and love that is needed more than ever. Now we face the real possibility of losing that space for good.
In 2018 the Precinct and local queer community mourned the death of owner Thor Stephens. The community came together with his husband and co-owner Brian Mcintire at the bar in a "celebration of life" ceremony. It was in the very same space that Brian and Thor tied the knot the year before. Precinct is not just a bar or a restaurant or a dance club; it represents family, love, community just as much as it is Thor's legacy to the downtown queer family.
And now, Precinct is asking for all of your help to stay alive. For almost a year now, the doors have been closed and locked due to the COVID-19 pandemic. While we shelter in place, the rent is due; fees and bills pile up; all while so many of our bar staff family have been out of work and struggling. The crisis will reach the point of no return unless we can get help from the very community we serve and love.
Please give what you can, and share this link with everyone you know. We will update this page with details on how your donations are put to use, whether it be loans, rent, or anything else we need to do to stay afloat and be there for you when we can get together again.
Thank you.
